To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

We loved the show- kept waiting for its return and finally decided to check only to find it canceled! Ridiculous- it was hilarious! Each character was great, each episode a treat. It was never given a good time slot or very much advertising. Shame on Fox!
I am so bummed THe Good Guys is cancelled. Their were times I could not breathe I was laughing so hard. I loved the quirky humor like I love Raising Hope. Really puts a damper in my day since read it was cancelled in January. Schucks!
I cannot believe Good Guys is canceled! Unreal! This was the funniest show going!
What a disappointment… no more The Good Guys? If I had known, I would have kept all the episodes I recorded; ALL 20 of them. Yes I recorded them because the time slot sucked. Listen up FOX; in order: HOUSE M.D., LIE TO ME, THE GOOD GUYS Mondays starting at 8:00 p.m. OK? Got it? Your welcome.
Really and totally bummed out that this show was canceled. Why is it that the networks continue to show crap shows over and over for years yet they can’t let a fun show stay on. I’m getting tired of all the reality shows that have taken over the airwaves. My coworker and I have decided that the shows we really enjoy (such as The Good Guys) are not enjoyed by many others because those folks are just not as sophisticated in TV viewing tastes (ha ha). I’ll really miss Dan the man and his silver love chariot even tho’ it… Read more »
This show was great! I loved it and so did my friends and kids!
Loved it, loved, loved it! Bradley Whitford should do more comedy. I laughed out loud every episode. Wondered why there was absolutely no promotion for the show. I think people couldn’t find it and didn’t know it was even on!
Shame on Fox for not doing any advertising for this gem. I will miss it.
Loved the show!!! Will miss it !!!
I am sooooo ticked off that The Good Guys are cancelled. It was hilarious!!!! Seriously if people didn’t like that show or didn’t “get it” then they had no sence of humour!!
TGG was one of the best shows that i’ve seen in a long time! my parents who are over 50 loved the show and want it back as well…give it a better time slot as others have said, and you will get more ratings and viewers no doubt! I looked forward to this show every friday it’s sad not to see it anymore
I loved the show, i allways got in a good mood after watching an episode of TGG.
Really, truly BUMMED out! Watching TGG was better than taking my chances on the latest DVD release. It was like a Guy Ritchie & The Farelly Bros fusion flick that provided an adrenalin kick as I laughed my ass off! I am absolutely stunned more people did not appreciate this one, all I can think is that the demo audience that would actually get it would not be spending their Friday nights @home watching tv. I know I wouldn’t survive without my DVR! Had I thought for a moment it was going to be cancelled, I wouldn’t have deleted from… Read more »
Fox is the kiss of death! If any cable channel had picked up this series, it would be a runaway hit. I always watched it on Hulu, and never at its crappy scheduled time. Lucky for Modern Family that Fox is homophobic, and they ended up on ABC at 9pm on Wednesday instead. If The Good Guys had that decent time slot they would have had it made. Fox would have even killed off Seinfeld by giving it the same bad time slot in the “dead zone” for its target audience. Plus, even Seinfeld needed the time to get discovered… Read more »

I am very upset the show was cancelled, it was hilarious, I loved it.
