To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Put it on FX on a wednesday nite like 8pm. Itll do good in that timeslot. My dad and I watched this show when ever he makes it home which is like once a week. Its one of his favorite shows.
Hello.
Great something else lost.
As far as the show 2and 1/2 men stupid I know all the punch lines before they are said.
Three’s company also long running numbingly predictible.
On the other hand.
This show was a learning experience into to cops working together with smart humor and political and social satire…… no wonder it was cancelled .. I will take this time to thank all involved in this venture.
Maybe USA will pick this one up. They’re the only network that consistently supports quirky characters. Brad channeling George W after his work on West Wing made it so over the top as to be funny. I liked it, because as a native of the area, I think Dallas has always taken itself far too seriously. The home of big hair and big nails still needs “The Good Guys.”
I will miss this show. It made me laugh out loud. Sadly, it seems that the majority of people like watching the morbid “blood-n-guts” shows, since this type of TV dominates air-time. Very, very sad.
The entire family is disappointed at the loss of “Good Guys” – My 11 Yr. old son dressed up
as ‘Detective Dan’ for Hallowe’en ! I still laugh at lines from the show -We would love to see it come back!
My whole family loved this show, even my teenaged daughter (who doesn’t like much TV) — BRING IT BACK – I’ve been waiting patiently for this awesome show’s return.
It’s too good to be cancelled. Witty, Borderline sexy, always entertaining, and GREAT ACTING.
SAVE THIS SHOW – for the whole family!
So Fox has cancelled “The Good Guys” – what a mistake! This show is GREAT!!! The writing is fresh and creative, the Actors are fantastic, the characters are fun – what is Fox thinking??? “Smartie Phone”, “Computer Machine” – come on! Give them another chance, and by that I mean, DON’T put them on the Friday night time slot!
FYI – I don’t watch ANY “reality” shows!!!
Tell the writers to shop the show to another network. THIS SHOW was a funny show with likable characters.
FOX has stale shows anyway. Glee, American Idol, The Cleveland Show. The only GOOD shows on FOX are Hell’s Kitchen, Master Chef (where is that?) and The Good Guys.
So maybe USA will take the show. Or TNT. TNT has a lot of good cop shows. This one would fit right in.
this is-was a very funny show I can’t believe it ‘s cancellation, really ? you should give it another try it’s by far way better than many stupid shows around: witty , funny, quirky,
sexy, great acting. Give it another shot at a better time slot and you will make more money!! don’t be stupid.
Loved this show. All the good ones go and the crap stays. That’s why less and less people tune into network television.
We are senior citizens and we loved the show. We watched every episode. We will really miss it!
How can you be so clueless? This is one of the funniest shows on television today. The “don’t tase me” and “left my badge in the cleavage” shows were the best. I think I might give up on FOX because I’m not happy with the way you’re doing things.
I’m laughing just thinking about the Don’t Tase Me episode. My husband and I watched this show online. I looked forward to it every week. It was hysterical and so cleverly written. It is a true shame that so many people enjoy watching ridiculous conjured antics of reality shows instead of something that is well written, directed and acted. Not to mention fun car chases!
Are you kidding me? One of the best shows in a long time and it gets canceled? Really?!? Try another time slot. Friday nights in the summer? Really? Nobody with a life stays home on Friday nights in the summer to watch TV until later in the evening. I watched it the next day on DVR because the timing was so terrible. Give this show another night and another ‘REAL’ chance and then judge.
i know it really sucks, i absolutly loved it!!!
I really enjoyed this show and was a dedicated viewer. Sorry to have it gone.
Quality show with great chemistry and sense of humor. My daughter and I looked forward to watching it every Friday night. Kind of surprising because I thought FOX has usually been really patient with its shows, like King of the Hill. Please give it another go at a better timeslot!! Like one of the previous comments I can’t believe all the crap reality shows that are on, but a good show like The Good Guys gets thrown on the scrap heap.
