To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

The Good guys was hilarious, Bradley and Colin were great together is one of my favotite shows. So sad no second season
What A bummer I loved the show!
My family and I watched The Good Guys and thought it was hilarious. I loved how the plot always comes around full circle from some odd event, and the flash backs and timing. Of course the actors too. It seems that all the clever shows like that get cancelled. Why can’t some network give that type of show a proper time slot AND promotion.
SO SO SO BUMMED!!!! IT WAS A FUNNY SHOW WITH UNEXPECTED TURNS AND ALL THE CHARACTERS WERE GREAT TOGETHER. A FUNNY COP SHOW, HOW GOOD CAN IT GET. ALL THE FUN QUIRKY SHOWS GET CANCELLED. WHY…………….
I too was sorry to hear it was cancelled. i really enjoyed it, and agree can’t stand another reality show.
you know its a shame with all the other crap reality shows american idiot ect here was some clever comedy and you had to pull it maybe i will have to watch another channel maybe zoom at least you can laugh
I LOVED this show! My husband is a retired detective, and I was an assistant prosecuting attorney for 10 years. The humor woven through the script was awesome. I really enjoyed when they would show a scene and then flash back to show what led up to the scene. It was an excellent break from the serious nature of the other cop shows that flood the other stations. Such a shame!
I loved this show! I am so bummed to hear it was canceled.
I loved the show. good plot lines and twists, sometimes I had to tape them, just to watch twice to catch parts I missed. Many times the seemingly separate plots twisted together at the very end. Excellent writing.
I liked it but they put it in a time slot that was sure death.
I enjoyed the show to a point…Although both actors good…I accepted Colin
Hanks (relatively new face to me) but did have a problem acccepting Bradley
Whitford as a sloppy, overweight, bad-mannered, loud-mouthed individual…All I
could do was grieve for the classy, intelligent and funny Josh from West Wing.
Too much of a departure…I did try, finding it hard to watch…finally gave up.
Sorry Brad…
I am very sorry they won’t be back, my husband and I enjoyed this crazy kind of quirky cops show. As for Fox, with a few exceptions, they stink as a television network as far as the type of programming and selections they have, of course, this is my opinion. We hope to see these two guys in something else real soon!!
That really sucks. I loved that show. It was everything all wrapped up in one. I was really looking forward to the new season. Bummer
Hey! this was a great show. It was hilarious. Unfortunately, it was a victim of Hollywood’s lack of instant gratification. They saw the low ratings and panicked. Give it some time. I miss this show. What a shame.
I’ve been looking forward to the second season and finally came to realize its more than likely never going to happen. Sad really, my dad was a San Diego Police officer for 30 years and is a texan. Naturally he loved the show because of its original and family friendly dynamic. I enjoyed it just as much but again, im left with little desire to see another mindless reality tv show or CSI/law and order spin off. The Good Guys was probably the one show I looked forward to seeing weekly the most, too bad really.
