To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

What an absolute tragedy!!! This was the best series on TV. Why in the world would they cancel it? My husband and I loved every moment. Funny as hell.
I thought the show was great!
I so agree with Ken! I thought “The Good Guys” was hysterical. I also loved “Flashforward”, and another show called “The Whole Truth” which was also cancelled but at least made a series finale. Unfortunately there was probably three things trying to record on my DVR that night and I didn’t notice it wouldn’t record it because ABC didn’t even advertise it would be on. There are too many stupid reality shows on now and it’s entirely possible all three of these shows were up against at least one! Moving “The Good Guys” to Friday night during the summer episodes… Read more »
They should of moved this show to a diffrent slot. The good guys was so funny and original. It beats the hell out of American Idol that show should be cancelled. Bring back The Good Guys!
Say it isn’t so! We loved that show! Bradly Whitford was hilarious–especially remembering his button-up portrayal of the young idealistic politician on West Wing. And Colin Hanks was great.
CRAPPY! This show was one of the ones I looked forward to to get the weekend started! bad time slot and bad luck. Sad day for this guy!
My whole family and most of our friends regularly watched the good guys and it was histerical! We couldn’t believe they cancelled it and we really want it back. I think it was the funniest show on tv ever and purchased the first season. We are all so disappointed.
Oh my gosh, I’m so disappointed. This show was my all time favorite. I thought that the acting was perfect for the show. I have been looking to see when this would come back on. I will also miss this show. There is not another show like it. It was just a good time on tv.
We will miss it!
Great sow! Very sorry to hear it has been cancelled. Was our family’s favorite. Television is mostly boring. A show that is different, funny, and original – TV continues to slide farther into the pits. Maybe someone failed to promoter properly.
one of the three best serials i’ve ever seen
I’m really gonna miss Jenny Wade, she was real nice to look at. I missed her after Reaper and where am I gonna get my Jenny fix now.
I’ll miss this show
My husband and I looked forward to each episode as we thought it was hilarious. It was good to just sit back and be entertained. We are sorry that it has been cancelled as we were looking forward to watching again.
Loved this show. It was a great idea. Naturally it was lost on the American public.
The show was hilarious!! It seems like the good shows get cancelled. I think Colin Hanks is a great actor like his Dad, Tom. I could not believe Bradley Whitford – he was such a riot. Both great actors. Wish they would pick this show up in cable. Too bad reality shows seem to do better – can’t stand them. Really wish there would be a second season and more!!!!
So stupid….they cancelled flashfoward too which I loved. all the good shows get cancelled everytime
