To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

One of the most hysterically funny cop shows with decent writing and an even better soundtrack. And I could look at Jenny Wade all day long!
i loved the whole season, still watch em on hulu, I feel it will have a great chance on cable if still has excellent writing.
What a disappointment! Great show, very funny. People over age 49 watch T.V. too, you know. You’d better figure this out, because boomers have more disposable income than other age groups and advertisers should be paying attention to us too!
I LOVED THAT SHOW IT’S A SHAME IT GOT CANCELLED THE CHEMISTRY THE DRAGNUT LIKE STYLE ****OH MAYBE WE CAN PUT MORE REALITY SHOWS ON LIKE MY PUPPYS HAVING BABIES
BUMMER! U have been checking for new episodes every few weeks online… No wonder. Loved it. Sad – maybe USA will pick it up?
Honestly, this was the ONLY show, next to Castle, that I looked forward to each week. I worry that the people who make the decisions as to which shows should continue or not may be related to those people presently running our country….. overlooking what WE THE PEOPLE are saying.
Wow, how craptastic is that? If anyone has seen this I don’t know why word of mouth hasn’t gotten around about how fun it is! If only it wasn’t on FOX. I rarely hit that channel (not an AI watcher) but it had it all….great writing, great opening music, great leading characters! Come on, USA put it on after Psych!
Wow!!! Some of the dumbest shows on TV right now and the one with some original writing and characters gets canned? The show was placed in one of the worst time slots and was never promoted as it should have been. This would have been a hot on the USA network. It was better than a few shows on USA now.
We have loved everything Bradley Whitford has ever been in and this was his best work. Dan Stark was sheer genius. As stated above, it’s so disappointing that creative, quirky shows like this get poor ratings while the lame reality shows turn idiots into stars our culture worships. Not to sound too dramatic, but every show we fall in love with gets cancelled. What the flip?
i soooooooooo agree. with both comments.. about reality show idiots becoming houshold names and that almost evry tv show i enjoy gets cancelled!!!
its a real shame networks dont listen to the masses and sabotage themselves with bad time slots
Det. Dan Stark was the best tv cop on today…. You cant take out the stash man…. Ill be busting punks in his name for years to come… tks a paint load FOX… shmucks
can’t believe it….we watched every week and looked forward to the next episode! it is sooo funny….probably had to make room for some paris or snookie reality show…..that should really get ratings up….
I looked forward to watching new episodes of this show! It was one of the funniest shows TV has shown in years. All the actors had real chemistry together and looked like they were having fun. I’m sorry that it wasn’t brought to more people’s attention because I think it could have attracted a following. I talked to several people who never heard of it. I will be looking to buy it on DVD for sure so I can enjoy TV again. I’m sick of all the depressing shows or other “quirky” comedies getting awards that don’t compare to the… Read more »
This was the best show on TV. Why in the world would they cancel it. I’m kinda sad about this. I guess they want to put more crappy shows on TV like Law and Order and crap like that.
My husband ( a cop for 25 years), my 14 year old daughter and I absolutely LOVED this show! We got a million laughs-mainly because “Dan Stark” looked and sometimes acted like my husband’s brother (also career law enforcement)! But this seems the way that decent non-“reality” shows are going–wew watch tv to escape reality only to have someone else’s dumb and overdone “reality” piped into our home! Please bring back the show!!
I am devastated! The Good Guys was one of my favorite television shows. I wish they would have tried changing the time slot or something, instead of just cancelling it so fast. It was one of the funniest shows out there!
i agree this show was best…and should have been placed, along side of raising hope …..this would have made a great family hour..but the Friday payday time slot is no place for a comedy…i think fox should strongly consider bringing it back..put it along side of raising hope…they will see the ratings then..thanks..i’m just one family’s opinion …
