The People’s Court has been cancelled, for the second time. The current incarnation of the daytime courtroom series will end with its current 26th season.
Debuting in first-run syndication in 1981, The People’s Court was the first court show to use binding arbitration. It was presided over by former Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Wapner. With the help of Rusty Burrell as his bailiff, Wapner’s show ran for 12 seasons and 2,484 half-hour episodes.
The series was revived four years later, in 1997, with former lawyer and Mayor of New York Ed Koch as arbiter. After two years, he was succeeded by former New York State Supreme Court Judge Jerry Sheindlin (husband of Judge Judy).
Sheindlin lasted less than two seasons before being replaced by retired Florida Circuit Court Judge Marilyn Milian in 2001. Milian has been leading the series ever since and is the longest-serving judge in the show’s long history. She was the first Latina judge to host a nationally syndicated television court show.
The news of The People’s Court series cancellation comes as the result of changing and challenging conditions in the daytime syndication market. Last month, it was announced that Dr. Phil is ending after a 21-year run. Many other syndicated informational series ended in 2022, including Dr. Oz, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Good Dish, Maury, The Real, and The Wendy Williams Show.
The People’s Court is a Ralph Edwards/Stu Billett Production and Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Telepictures. It is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
Judge Mathis, which is also distributed by Warner Bros., has also been cancelled, after 24 seasons.
What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching The People’s Court series over the years? Will you miss seeing this program on the schedule?
Please bring back the people’s court. I have looked forward to watching this show for the past 29 years. I have learned so much from judge Milan with all that is changing in life it was the one thing I count on to brighten my day
PLEASE PLEASE bring it back!!!
I am so saddened in the cancelation of People’s Court! After my retirement I made a point to be up in the morning in time to watch People’s Court.
I will be hoping to hear the show will appear somewhere with the same great cast.
Judge Milian and husband John, Douglas and all the rest of the cast!
I really enjoyed people’s court. Judge milian did not put up with idiots or rudeness. Knew her stuff. I want to thank the show for the send off and Harveys farewell. Best of luck to you all.
O
One of the few show I bothered to watch over the years as I have found it so helpful – it has made me rethink how I approach issues that are disturbing to me. It has helped me be a better person overall. (instead of knee-jerking being a loadmouth jerk I stop and think whether it is worthwhile to pursue and if I am going to pursue, the manner I do. Most helpful in how I respond/react at work as well) Sad the end has come as I found it a true life learning classroom.
So disappointed. I loved watching the show from the very beginning. Please bring it back!
I have been a fan of People’s Court since Judge Wapner days. I have enjoyed watching Judge Marilyn for many years!! I was shocked today when Harvey said it was the last show. So sad to see it going off the air. Judge Marilyn is Beautiful, Brilliant and I learned so much from her very fair rulings. I hope she will be on a new show very soon. Her and John are a Wonderful Couple!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn’t know the show was canceled till today..I really enjoyed the segments with John. I will really miss the show. I am retired, am disabled, but crochet while I watch the show. Maybe John will have time now to visit the Pinball museum in Roanoke Virginia
I watch this show everyday and will miss it. As a stockholder in Warner Bros. I am not surprised as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav try’s to cut everything to make WBD profitable. Comcast is rumored to make an attempt to buy WBD next year so maybe if they do they will bring the peoples court back and many other shows he slashed.
I say get rid of Zaslav. Just saying. Leave the Peoples Court Alone.
My day has revolved around the People Court and especially the personal conversations between Judge Milian and her Husband as it so reflected my own life situations. I will truly miss the series and hope she can find a new venue to entertain the many viewers who I know will miss her as I do.
I take a break from work everyday to watch Judge Milian and the People’s Court. It was very sad to hear that the show has ended. I hope there is some way that it can return.
Peopl’ Court was the only daytime tv worth watching. I will miss it
I love this show. The only court show I watch. Got much better with Judge Milian. Sorry to see it go.
My husband and I were devastated to hear that The Peoples Court was cancelled. Judge Milano was such a fair and upbeat judge. We will certainly miss her. Wishing her a great life.
