It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
I liked the show. It was different and edgy. Bring it back please!
I also liked the show, & I was just starting to see the unique artistic edge to the show when it was GONE!
Once again, shows with any quality or that are different, are quickly removed from society unless they air on networks like AMC, etc.
Sigh
I ENJOYED WATCHING THE SLAP, IT WAS DIFFERENT THAN YOUR TYPICAL EVERYDAY LOVE/ROMANCE STORIES OR CRIMINAL CIA CAR CHASING SHOWS , THAT ALWAYS GOES WRONG…THIS PROGRAM HAD A BIT OF EDGE AND SPIN TO IT, MAYBE THE PUBLIC ISNT READY FOR REALITY, *OD FORBID A CHILD BEING SLAPPED ON LIVE TELEVISION….BIG DEAL! SO WHAT! THATS WHAT I SAY….I LIKED THE SHOW, AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT COME BACK…
Definitely agree! They didn’t ask us! Come on! Ys
LOVED the show. Clever! Did not hear about while the season was running. Only after. Poor job promoting the show. That was the issue for poor ratings. Please reconsider bringing on another season. and this time promote it so people know it’s on!
definitely agree – bring it back – come on!
Absolutely loved the show!!!!! Please bring it back!
I loved the show very say to hear it was canceled…remember timing is everything!
I d’nt cane believe it I wont to see season 2 please please
BRING BACK THE SLAP! The multi-talented cast is dynamically diverse. The writing is superb. The vision is realistic. The relatedness of the storylines is right on time. What’s not to love… the day and the time slot. Did the network set this “breath of fresh air”, potential drama of the decade, for failure? Other networks have Thursday night juggernauts that have established a following. The Slap never stood a chance on Thursdays without a plan of action; perhaps a different night, a different time, a different season. Although, I’d follow this ingenious show ANYWHERE; any day, any time, any network.… Read more »
Totally agree.
Friend and I watched faithfully , now left hanging in mid air… wanted to see how the family lives revolved , real people with real problems, as family’s are…we looked foward to calling each other to discuss there behavior…we miss it …
I googled The Slap to see when it would air again and was very disappointed th.at there is no season 2. This show had such a different story line and great characters. But they have shows like Blood and Oil that is so predictable and boring. Same **** different day! But the Slap showed us something worth watching. Bring it back ! ,
my boyfriend and I have been waiting for this to come back on. guess the wait is over it’s not coming.i really wanted to see what was gonna happen. I’m kinda bummed.
This was an outstanding show that I looked forward to each week. The concept of how a moment can change everything is the basis for excellent drama. The cast was outstanding. When I consider some of the series that have managed to remain on the air for years and then see that a program like The Slap cancelled due to low ratings, I realize why people are turning to HBO, Showtime and the like. Either major networks are just not up to running quality television any longer or the American public has become addicted to garbage.
I would have watched a second season of The Slap.
HAVE BEEN ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE RETURN OF THIS SHOW!!! EXCELLENT STORYLINE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND FORMAT!!! POOR RATINGS??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??
Time to shop it around to other networks or give it better time slot and promotion… IT IS AN EXAMPLE OF TV AT ITS FINEST!! VERY CONTEMPORARY, STYLISH AND RELEVANT….BRiING IT BACK!!!
I agree. Loved the story line. Very contemporary!
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT SHOW!!! HAVE BEEN ANXIOUSLY AWAITNG ITS RETURN!! LOW RATINGS??!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!!
Too bad..I really liked this show. Compelling topic. Good acting. Sad that it isn’t coming back :((
