It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
I didn’t watch the slap, but how do you have a show based upon a slap of a child? Who does this nowadays anyway to their own children much less someone else’s… I see several kudos on this site for the show which called it thought provoking… in what way?!? Should I or should I not slap someone else’s child? Let me help you end the debate: No. Now get a life or a sex partner or something.
It is so hilarious that you are over there having a debate with yourself. (I do not have a life so I was cracking up!)
Anyway, the show was not only about the slap itself, but also about how each person was affected by that slap. (One person commented about child abuse and the like.)
Many of us already have sex partners/spouses and watched the show with our significant others.
Stop having single/one-sided debates. Of course, if it is warranted or really that important, then perhaps…
Wow. Would it have been better if it had been called The Affair, The Trial, The Party..??
Who cares about the title?! The slap was an incident that set off various chains of events. Its a family drama with a lot more meat than you would think., obvioysly since ypu didnt bother to watch the show youre critiquing.
Dont say the show couldnt go any where because youre too small-minded and unimaginative to see the big picture. Smh
The Slap was a very good show. They acting was incredible. Too bad it got cancelled. I guess well written shows isn’t what people are looking for.
Excellent show for those who aren’t looking for a cheap laugh track junk show. Disappointed yet again by NBC for canceling a fantastic show.
Was very interested in actors and story line, thought provoking, discussion starter. Hoping for a return if even by another station. Sorry NBC but miss the show. If a warning was given you might have received a viewers reaction that would have surprised you. Feel like NBC left us hanging in the middle of a conversation.
I’m so disappointed! Thanks NBC for pulling it just when it was getting good! A very thought provoking show! Here’s an idea NBC, why don’t you add another stupid sit com! I’m done with NBC shows.
It was really good & the characters were great !!! & o hope theres a second season about the slap .
Loved “The Slap!” Excellent writing and acting for a controversial topic. Short-lived for other potential story lines with complex characters. Loved all the known and all the unknown actors in the show. Well done and very thought provoking! Please bring it back for another season!
Excellent acting and weekly story lines. Plus no canned laughter. It was refreshing that something new was given and taken away from us. I would watch a second season.
I stopped watching The Slap after NBC cancelled Allegiance. What’s the point on getting into a good show after the network cancels and remove the remaining episodes. I will finish watching the slap at HULU
HOW VERY DISAPPOINTING – THIS SHOW WAS AMAZING – SO TRUE TO LIFE AND THE CHARACTERS WERE EXCEPTIONAL ACTORS. I LOVED IT BECAUSE IT WAS SO BELIEVABLE AND NOT ANOTHER TRASHY AND STUPID COMEDY. WHAT A SHAME NOT TO HAVE GREAT SHOWS LIKE “PARENTHOOD” AND “THE SLAP” TO LOOK FORWARD TOO. ENOUGH OF THE CRAZY COMEDIES THAT ARE REPLACING THEM!!! BRING IT BACK!!!
So upset the slap was canceled.. Looked forward to an exciting new series… Very unfortunate…
i am very disappointe the slap has bee cancelled!!!!! i loved all the characters and was really getting cauht up in the characters. It was great acting andwriting with messages of so much relation truths. Bring it back! I DON’T KNOW WHY RATINGS WERE LOW? i can’ t see anything it was competing with. Maybe it was advertised enough?
I’d love to know if its contiued ever!
Me and my family and friends were looking forward to each weeks episodes. It’s too bad that intelligent, well acted, well written shows that do not include cops, robbers and murders are not so popular. This was a good discussion starter and each character’s viewpoint worth consideration. Thoughtful TV!
loved the show… ! loved the show! all of my friends as well.. very well written and the acting was superb. much better than a lot of series like madam secretary or the royals and the real life events are believable. wish it were still on next season
We enjoy watching the slap…it is controversial and debatable the topic and would like to see more…
