It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
Network Execs are useless, this storyline was poor and being replaced for Allegiance was a bad move. Actors were good but plot was bad. Thank You for canceliing
I loved it. Imagine the network will replace it with something mindless.
I started with the first episode earlier today. I am off from work and wanted to watch something on Hulu. I ended up watching the whole season and just googled to see when season 2 was starting before finding this site….
I love the cast, love the plot, love everything about the show. It’s too bad…
I do agree that the title limits the longevity of the show
I thought the show was great. Great characters, the best cast, Peter Sarsgaard, Uma Thurman, Zachary Quinto, and lots more, I mean come on, and it was a great story. I honestly think it was the name. It was the brunt of a lot of late night monologues, so maybe people had no idea that it was a terrific show and just didn’t tune in.
Shame though.
Very weak rewrite of the Australian version. The show runners say in an interview that they changed plots elements to better suit American culture. Key example…in the Aussie version Anouck gets the abortion. Presumably that would be too much for American audiences. Aussie version showed Rosie’s child as very disturbed, largely due parenting. We didn’t see so much of that in the American version, thus diluting the moral ambiguity surrounding the The Slap. Those are just two examples. Check out the Australian version for a truly compelling drama.
terrific show!
I enjoyed the show and the characters. I didn’t like the ‘end’…….. There was a lot missing…. I didn’t realize it was over actually. Wish they would have decided to bring it back.
Like the show and actors. Bad move.
I liked it & was looking forward to more but how long could it go on with one slap?
it’s terific
Loved it. Talk shows would talk about. Was getting into story lines especially fiirst one whete we learned hw was having affair. Was in bad time slot
Miss it I really liked it!! Maybe Sundays would’ve been a better choice for this show!! BOO HOO BUMMER❗
I know the role may seem like he would be moving backwards in his career, but if the cancellation of The Slap means Zachary Quinto would reprise his role (even just for a few brief episodes) as Sylar in the Heroes reboot, then I’d be all for it. However, I think Quinto has publicly said he has moved passed this character.
I really liked it. We went on a cruise and when we got back I couldn’t findvitvon Thursday night! How did it end?
I liked the Slap.. it sure was better than all those dumb reality shows…
I really enjoyed the show the writing the acting kept getting more interesting. This is why I watch very few series on NBC,ABC,or CBS every time they put on a show that is really good if it doesn’t take off like the 4th of July then down it goes. Today there is a tremendous amount of series to watch with netflix and the like . They need time for people to catch up with it. Some of the very best show I watch on Netflix are the shows the networks cancelled!!!!!!! Why don’t they just run shows that indeed are… Read more »
Excellent show and great acting. It reminds me of the 1980’s TV show “30 Something”. The problem is, there is a lot of great shows on Thursday night. I don’t think it was the show itself, I think it was time slot or probably it should have aired on a different day. Will miss it.
