There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

CBS: Please do not replace The Unit with another stupid reality show. Actions like this are forcing us to direct our viewing to USA and TNT for exciting new and fresh programming like The Closer, Leverage, Saving Grace, Dark Blue, Burn Notice, Raising The Bar and many others. Broadcast network TV has become boringly the home of senile reality programing and CSI knockoffs.
when all that seems to be on TV are reality shows, this was a breath of fresh air. I think we need to be aware that although just a show, it takes the plots from what very well might be real. I am sorry CBS didn’t leave well enough alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and will miss it. Maybe someone will pick it up and run with it. Please don’t give us another reality show!
You want to know why the viewship is down is because most of us on the East coast end up missing the show because a sporting event ran LATE!! They should have left time for regular shows to air at their proper times so fans don’t miss it!! Either that or repeat it later, change nights, whatever!! I hate when they cancel shows but don’t close off the story, too many are cancelled without giving the fan some satisfaction – NOT FAIR CBS!!!
I’m still having withdrawals from the show. The show was half the budget of the sorry arse shows that did not get the boot. GO FIGURE
CBS -SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best shows on TV. i NO LONGER WATCH CBS, there is no reason too with decisions being made like that. Loved all the characters and their lives. Just an awesome show
I can’t tell you how patriotic this show made me feel. I am so sick of the fluff reality shows and game (Survivor, Amazing Race, Big Brother) shows and the Law and Order shows. The Unit was a unique show. It was special. No where else can Americans get a glimpse of how our American men protect our country. I felt proud to be an American. I know they were just stories but just the same, I felt good when the show was over. I felt proud. I love Dennis Haysbert, but if he does not want to come back,… Read more »
This is a MAJOR loss! The Unit should be brought back due to its excellent actors/actresses & superb storyline.
I’m not sure who or where they (CBS) get the numbers of viewers, but it took a long time for them to get me to watch CBS took a very long time. It only took season four’s cancelation of The Unit to get me to leave CBS. I’ll watch reruns of The O’Riley Factor before CBS gets me back.
I’m 48, exmillatary I loved the show when every one else has reality shows, stupid yall cancel a great show what next a really great reality show? STUPID!
Maybe CBS will reconsider and bring the show back after all. I made it a point to be in front of my TV when it came on. With or without Haysbert, please bring it back.
Well that sucks I have just recently gotten back from a 13 month tour overseas and the unit was a show we all watched while there. I will fully agree with allot of the comments on here so far by saying that CBS is now a large moutain of crap. If Big Brother season 9000 can be on the air why not a show that does not suck the brian matter from my head as I am watching. Way to go CBS once again some ****** in the office, most likely watching Big Brother season 9000 said hey this show… Read more »
WHAT A SAD THING TO TAKE THE UNIT OFF THE AIR .WHEN IT KEEPS OTHER SHOWS THAT TO BE HONEST SUCK. A SHOW IS ENTERTAINMENT AND WHEN THIS SHOW WAS ON AND WAS BEING WATCHED THATS WHAT IT WAS PURE ENTERTAINMENT.
BRING IT BACK CBS
CBS killed this show by moving it around. Sunday night? What political manuevering forced it to it’s death. As always what wasted breath these comments are.
I cannot believe CBS cancelled this show but kept shows like CSI:NY..geez give me a break, I’m 37 and have been watching this show since it came on…STOP BEING LAME CBS, bring the show back!
The Unit was one of the better written shows on TV today. I am ex special ops and looked forward to watching each week. I watch very little TV on a regular basis. I am 40 years old and own a small portfolio advisory firm. I am certain that I am the kind of target market the advertisers are trying to reach; CBS just managed to loose me all together.
