To little surprise, CBS has pulled Three Rivers from the Sunday night schedule, effective immediately. Will the show be back? Has it been cancelled?
Three Rivers follows a group of dedicated doctors and medical staffers who help those in need of organ transplants. The series stars Alex O’Loughlin, Katherine Moennig, Daniel Henney, Justina Machado, Christopher Hanke, Amber Clayton, and Alfre Woodard.
The medical drama got off to a slow start in the ratings back in early October. Unfortunately, the numbers only got worse as the weeks wore on and it became a likely candidate for early cancellation.
To CBS’ credit, the network has been patient with the series and has kept it on the air. Two weeks ago, the network tried switching timeslots with Cold Case. While the veteran crime drama benefited from the time change and attracted more viewers, Three Rivers did not.
Three Rivers has now been pulled from the Sunday night schedule. As expected, Cold Case will slip into the earlier timeslot and repeats of various crime dramas will take over at 10pm.
A CBS spokesperson has said that Three Rivers’ fate has not yet been decided but the network has not ordered any additional installments beyond the initial 13 episodes.
Eight episodes of the drama have been aired, leaving five on the shelf. CBS will likely burn them off either on Saturdays or during the summer months but, unless the execs have a major change of heart, Three Rivers is essentially cancelled.
What do you think? What went wrong with Three Rivers? Is Sunday night football to blame for the show’s failure to attract more viewers or was the show flawed?

Finally I found a show that I really enjoyed watching and now it is being pulled.. There are so many reality shows that need to be taken off and they keep running these. Keep Truma on and take off all the reality shows and I can tell you people will watch it.
It is tough for a tv show to really shine when it is debuted during the same time slot as most Sunday night football games and the schedule is never the same from week to week. I really enjoyed the show. It has a great message and shows the importance of organ donors. I was always sitting myself down in front of the tv to watch the show to find myself wondering when it will be aired. This show wasn’t given the time and respect that it deserves.
Any show following Feetball is doomed to suffer ratings decline.
Futurama was killed off by the pigskin, despite its charming gusto.
Part of the reason is time shifting. Most folks won’t sit around waiting for the post game talking heads to shut up, or worse, watch shows that were bumped into the following timeslot.
Folks who rely on recording their favorites are also stymied when the Feetballers bump the time slot.
What is CBS thinking.. finally a great medical drama.. Is there nothing that can save the medical dramas at all ER was one of the all time greats I get that but finally something that we have never seen a show devoted to transpalants, unos etc.. it always ER, Paramedics, Medical Students etc.. finally something different.. BRING IT BACK CBS BRING IT BACK..
Trauma is interesting as well its ER meets 3rd watch.. why would these networks kill off these great shows..
Just one mans opinion
I really enjoyed watching Three Rivers and the only way I find out what had happen was that I came to this site. I love football also and I have been a fan of Cold Case since it aired. But this is unfair that you would put a new show behind Football, Amazing Race, and Cold Case and think it will survive. When you have a 30 minute span where you have to wait unitl the last show end to watch the next show and it takes us into 10:30 pm, when we should be watching the news. I really… Read more »
I was very disappointed to see that Three Rivers was cancelled as I really enjoyed that show. Perhaps if you bring it back at a different time slot on a different day. I liked the development of the characters (both the doctors and patients). I really hope the execs reconsider!
Three Rivers wasn’t given a fair chance and Cold Case isn’t either!!! The football games being on and throwing everything off schedule is the cause for lower ratings. I can’t wait for my favorite shows to be on in the time slot they’re suppose to be viewed at. Cold Case is one of the shows I hate to miss and having to set the DVR for several hours and having to forward through the recordings is such an aggravation. I’ll be glad when football season is OVER!
This is a great show that brings the very important subject of organ donation to the viewers attention. I love how it tells the story from everyones point of view. CBS has missed the mark if they cancel this show. Find Three Rivers a better time slot and you will get a loyal following. This is the one medical drama worth watching!
WHY!? this show was amazing, it’s every show i like seems to be cancelled, this is a sad story.
Why do they always cancel the good shows? They keep stupid shows like Old Christine, Gary Unmarried and 2 1/2 Men, but cancel good shows like Three Rivers. I don’t understand CBS’s way of thinking.
The problem isn’t Three Rivers, it’s the delayed schedule due to the extended football games – you guys need to have a banner scrolling across the screen stating the amount of delay due to the football delay so people know when to tune back in to watch the show. I like football, don’t get me wrong, but Three Rivers is an excellent show and deserves a better chance. There are plenty of us who are not drones to reality shows and that seems to be all the networks want to offer, not good family entertainment with a real message. Put… Read more »
Why is it they cancel the GOOD shows before they really get a chance to obtain a following?
The whole premise of the show is great!! It’s good to see good things happen on tv when so much bad is going on in the world. C’mon CBS, what are you thinking???
CBS is totally wrong with cancelling Three Rivers. It was a great show. Alex O’Laughlin and the entire cast were great. He is an awesome actor. His earlier show of Moonlight was cancelled prematurely as well. Come on CBS get it right for once.
AGREED!!! Moonlight was so good. I was ready for more and then found out they cancelled it.
It was a great show. I do not know about you but i really enjoyed watching it. Although, it is a shame that it was on the CBS channel because every time i tried to catch up with it, i couldn’t because i was out of the area and i do not have the (CBS) channel.
it was a good show, bad time slot on sundays against more established shows that had loyal followings.. mid week, say wednesdays, when nothing else is one would have been better..
