On Monday night, ABC aired what was promoted as the season finale of the dramatic series What About Brian. But as fans of the show know, the March 26th episode only marked the 19th episode of the season. If the series was given an order for 22 episodes and there are lots of storylines unresolved, where are the rest?
What About Brian debuted on ABC on April 16, 2006 with the first of five initial episodes. The series follows the story of Brian Davis (7th Heaven alumni Barry Watson) as a “third wheel” in a group of close-knit friends and couples. The series also stars Sarah Lancaster, Rosanna Arquette, Matthew Davis, Rick Gomez, Amanda Detmer, Jason George, Amanda Foreman, Tiffani Thiessen, and Jessica Szohr.
Following the initial season’s ratings, it seemed fairly certain that the series would not return for another. ABC surprised many by renewing the series with an initial order of 13 episodes for a second season for Fall 2007. When the show returned on October 9th, ABC seemed encouraged by its early second season performance. On November 10th, ABC increased the 13 episode order to a full 22.
So, with the March 26th episode only marking the 19th episode, some are wondering if this means that there are three episodes that haven’t been aired? In short, no. Shortly after ABC gave the additional episode order in November, the ratings dropped by about 20%. A network rep has confirmed to us that the episode order was trimmed back, though this was not officially announced. Losing three episodes likely made it difficult for the producers to end the season as they would have liked.
ABC has already announced that 11 of its series have been renewed for next year. What About Brian wasn’t one of them. With the drop in viewership and its shortened season, it’s unlikely that ABC has enough faith in the show to give it another chance.
We’ll probably know Brian’s fate by mid-May when the network announces its full Fall schedule. Until then, Brian viewers can take sollace in knowing that they’ve seen all of the episodes that were produced. Fans of other ABC shows like Big Day haven’t been as lucky. Stay tuned!

I can’t believe the show was cancelled! I had been waiting patiently for it to return and now I see “Brian” on another show.
Sorry ABC didn’t give it a chance.
I LOVE “WHAT ABOUT BRIAN” AND AM SO DISSAPPOINTED THAT IT HAS BEEN CANCELED. i BEG ABC TO BRING IT BACK AND PLEASE PUT THE 19 EPIAODES THAT AIRES OUT ON DVD.
I have been waiting for What about Brian all throughout the summer. I hope that it will be brought back. It seems to me that a lot of viewers miss the show. I know that if you would keep it at one certain time and day, then all the viewers will for sure make the ratings very high. It is a great show please put it back on the air!
I am so disappointed! I was hoping to see season 3 of What About Brian after the Bachelor on Monday nights, but to my dismay it hasn’t aired! Please Bring it back on! PLease
Everyone needs to get their friends to sign the petition. The more names we have, the better.

Me too. It sucks that ABC keeps cancelling its shows. I loved WAB…any late 20’s 30 something I know who had seen the show loved it. Any ABC exec reading this BRING IT BACK. If you want a show to gain an audience you HAVE TO GIVE IT A CHANCE.
Canceled? Lame…
In the UK, they have just aired the season finale of the second season! There are so many untied ends? Like what did Brian want to say to that girl at the end of the episode? My sister absolutely LOVES this show, and is terribly upset that it has come to an end.. it is due to not enough exposure and it being on at a bad time, like at 11pm at night and not at peak times like 7pm. There should absolutely be a third season, there is so much demand for it!
I’m soooo disappointed the show was cancelled. I haven’t been watching tv much lately because there is nothing good (its all reality tv),but was checking to see when this was coming back. It was our release from a long day. Its nice to step out of reality every once in a while after getting the kids to bed and all these reality shows are ruining that! Bring Brian back!! Please!
“What about Brian” was a great show, and to leave us hanging like that is unfair! Please bring it back…ABC you do this too often, that’s why your ratings are low, people don’t want to commit and then see their shows taken off the air!
“What about Brian” deserves another chance.
I looked forward to watching “What about Brian” every week for the short time that it was on…I loved the cast and story lines. It made me relate alot since the age group for them and me was similar. All this talk about ratings or what not, how can these networks expect people to tune in to a show in just a short period of time..give people a chance to know what is on TV. I’m upset that ABC also cancelled “Six Degrees”, another great show! I honestly didn’t even know that “Brian” was cancelled (is it even official yet?)… Read more »
I can’t believe this show was cancelled! This was my favorite show. Even my husband watched it. I just don’t get it! I don’t know why it didn’t gain the viewers. I think it did not have enough advertising. I didn’t even know it was cancelled until I saw him on previews for that new show with christina applegate. I am sooooo sad!!!!!
loved “What about Brian” kept waiting for it’s return.
