Earlier this week, AMC gave Hell on Wheels a season three renewal of 10 episodes. Now, it appears that could be in jeopardy.
Showrunner John Shiban has decided to leave Hell on Wheels after two seasons. As a result, AMC now says that season three is contingent on a replacement being found and approved by the cable channel.
Here are the statements from AMC and Shiban:
AMC: “John Shiban has informed AMC, Entertainment One and Endemol that while he was fully on board when the network informed him about their intent to pick-up Hell on Wheels, he has since made the personal decision that he will be unable to return as showrunner. He has asked the production partners to seek a replacement showrunner. Like all of our shows, network pick-ups are always conditioned on an approved showrunner. We are confident that eOne and Endemol will satisfy that obligation in the near future.”
John Shiban: “I’m very proud of our work on HELL ON WHEELS and was thrilled to hear the show would have a Season Three. I have since made the difficult decision that the time has come for me to leave. I care deeply about the series and will do whatever I can to aid in the transition to ensure the continued success of the show. I truly value all the time I have spent with this wonderful group of very talented people.”
What do you think? Do you think that season three of Hell on Wheels will still happen? Will it be delayed?
I hate to see him go, but would hate to see this show cancelled! Wonderful cast and Crew, great storyline……. LOVE this Show.
I post on another blog about HBO cancelling “Deadwood” to replace it with “John Of Cincinnati “, which lasted …well not long. Stupid was the nicest thing the fans were saying about the HBO powers that be. I love this show and hope the powers that be at AMC don’t F@#K up like HBO did.
This is the best program on TV. We can’t even find a show that has guts, good acting on TV
any more. Why would you cancel such a program. It would be a shame if this happens.
You can’t fix stupid!!!! One of the finest shows on tv! Shame!
That’s a smart answer to a tricky qesution
I am puzzled with how a “Showrunner” can trump the talent on this show. Hell on Wheels is the kind of show that can run itself. AMAZING talent. GREAT scripts. FASCINATING storylines. This is a monster show with monster talent and the thought of cancelling it should be ejected on down the rails to the next stop!! DO NOT CANCEL is my vote and I support this message and suspect millions of others do so as well!
This can’t be happening! Do whatever it takes exec’s…don’t halt, delay,or cancel this superb Series….PLEASE!!! We,who enjoy smart, creative shows are already struggling to find great, Quality programming (something that is Sorely missing),don’t take this from us,we BEG you.
I sure hope the get a replacement. I don’t know what a showrunner is but they are obviously important. I know Community had issues with one in the past as well.
Great show. Great acting!
I think that another excellant show will bite the dust. To bad this is an excellant series. Shame on AMC if they let it go.
