It was an event that cartoon fans had been fantasizing for years. In 1987, many years after the cancellation of both The Flintstones and The Jetsons, this TV movie was released as part of the Hanna-Barbera Superstars 10 — a group of 10 animated movies that were created for syndication. Though the two animated series were often compared to one another, it was the first meeting of the space-age and stone-age families. Many of the original voice actors returned to perform their trademark characters.
In the movie, Fred Flintstone (Henry Corden) and Barney Rubble (Mel Blanc) are fired from their jobs at the quarry and are afraid to tell their wives. In the future, George Jetson (George O’Hanlon) is having work issues of his own with Mr. Spacely (Mel Blanc). To escape his problems, George takes his family on a little vacation, courtesy of son Elroy (Daws Butler) and his experimental time machine. When the invention malfunctions, the Flintstones and Rubbles are sent to the future and the Jetsons are left stranded in the past. Will the stone-age and the space-age ever be the same again?
Though The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones has been released on VHS tape a few times over the years, it was never released on DVD until now. The animated movie is available from the Warner Archive Collection and can be purchased for $14.95 directly from the studio or for $17.99 from Amazon.
