Teddy Rist (James Purefoy) is a billionaire playboy who loves everything about money — earning, having, and spending it. He’s a successful tycoon but his life is forever changed while visiting a Nigerian town. While there, he rescues a young boy during a wild hurricane. Spontaneous and impulsive, Rist quickly decides to channel his passion, power, and money into helping those in need.

But Rist’s actions aren’t just about helping other people. He’s also trying to exorcise his personal inner demons. They’ve been festering inside him ever since his young son died. Since that tragic event, adding danger and risk to his life is the only way Rist can feel truly alive.

He wants everyone on the planet to have a good education, a solid meal and a healthy life — and he’ll go to any extreme to make it happen. From blackmailing a prime minister for women’s rights to dodging bullets while delivering a life-saving vaccine, Rist keeps his adrenaline pumping by putting his business head and money-making skills to good use.

His billionaire partner in business is Philip Maidstone (Jesse L. Martin) and Olivia (Neve Campbell) is both Rist’s wife and the head of the partners’ charitable foundation.

I would like to say this is the best TV series I’ve seen in a long time. I’m only 25 but for the past ten years the only thing thats on are these stupid reality shows. When have you ever seen a good American Family set down and watch one of them. I remember watching bonanza, the waltons, Beverly hillbillies. Its good hearted show like them and the philanthropist that makes poeple realize they can make a difference in this world by helping others. All of those other shows the real world, Girls next door, ect they just make the youth want to try and be cool crazy like them and thats where our nations going to poop.
LET IT STAY! IM WITH YOU!! 100%

YES, The Philanthropist is a GREAT show…
So was Life…and Life On Mars ! And what the ‘Heck’ happen to Chuck?!?
I think the writers are really good at just what they do, I just question the networks…”…if the ratings aren’t up (way-up…), the shows get canceled…even if the shows are really good !

Tell us sumthin good! Please keep this show on. It’s contemporary, it’s relaying a good message, it’s great action, it’s character driven, AND it’s gotten my attention. I want more.

I ‘DITTO’ all of the above comments! This was one of the best shows I have seen in years. The lead was a great actor, portraying a fascinating character and some of the major needs in the world were being conveyed. People might actually want to try to start helping others, which was an important lesson to be learned from the script. PLEASE BRING THE SERIES BACK FOR A FULL SEASON AND BEYOND!
