Last Friday, CBS cancelled its 2 Broke Girls TV show, despite the fact that the sitcom was still earning respectable ratings. Because the sixth and final season garnered an average of 1.31 in the 18-49 demo and 5.621 million viewers, it was expected CBS would renew the series, although perhaps for a shorter seventh season. Now CBS has revealed the reason behind this surprise cancellation.
The CBS comedy follows the Max Black (Kat Dennings) and Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs), who work in a greasyspoon, which they now partially own. The 2 Broke Girls cast also includes Garrett Morris, Jonathan Kite, Matthew Moy, and Jennifer Coolidge. Reportedly, Cher was in talks to guest star in a seventh season, had the show been renewed.
Deadline interviewed CBS head of scheduling Kelly Kahl and asked her about the cancellation, which she explained was a creative decision. Here’s more:
“2 Broke Girls was a really good show for us for a very long time,” CBS head of scheduling Kelly Kahl told Deadline. “Our comedy development this year was very good and whenever your comedy development is really good, it puts a lot of pressure on some of your older shows. We felt creatively it was time and we had to create some space on the schedule to get some new product on.”
Was the decision entirely creative and scheduling or it came down to business? 2 Broke Girls, which is not cheap, comes from Warner Bros TV, and there had been rumblings about the network seeking a piece of the show’s lucrative backend.
“I think it was a creative decision more than anything else,” Kahl said. “It was not a show we own but we picked up (new comedy series Me, Myself & I and By The Book) from Warner Bros. So I don’t think it was a business decision, I think it was creatively we felt it was time.”

CBS has no ownership in 2 Broke Girls while having to cover its cost (or most of it) because of the show’s age. Meanwhile, 2 Broke Girls was a key asset for Warner Bros TV, holding the record for the biggest off-network comedy series sale, earning WBTV $1.7 million an episode from TBS alone.
What do you think? Is 2 Broke Girls ending at the right time? Should CBS have renewed it for a shortened seventh season, to give fans some closure?
The should fire the lady who BSted us about why it was cancelled and give us the show we want to watch I will not be watching the new ones.
I think it should have been renewed for seventh season. I loved this show and it actually made me laugh. They could of at least brought back and we could have seen the 2 girls get married off.
I really enjoyed this show. I hope another network picks it up.
I couldn’t wait for Two Broke Girls to come on every week.. I would look forward to it..it was something that everyone should look forward to.. something to make you laugh and have a good time at the end of a hard day
It’s about time this awful show was pulled. It was so trashy.
2 broke girls become a staple… It was a show I didn’t even worry about it being cancelled. I am a “professional tv watcher”. I watch 5 or 6 hours of tv a day. I do read about my favorite how’s ratings during the season, as well, towards the end of the season I keep up with which shows are being cancelled…… I was shocked when I heard of the shows cancellation. There were shows with lower ratings that got renewed. I’m not satisfied with the reasons CBS gave for this great shows cancellation. I think it would be a… Read more »
I love this show! It is one I could always go to when I was having a bad day for a good laugh. I love all the cast and they all work so well together. I implore the broadcasting station to rethink their decision and to renew this show for more seasons. If not, I hope another network sees how great this show is and picks it back up. We want more of Two Broke Girls!
Then the prime time stations wonder why they are losing viewers to Cable. Canceling shows like 2 Broke Girls and Pure Genius makes me wonder if these stations ever listen to their viewers. Hell, we are only the ones that buy the sponsors’ products — hell, what do we know?
here’s a petition if you want the show back.

This was a great show and if they were going to cancel, then they should have at least given us closure… I hope someone else will pick this show up..
I really liked the show very upset it was cancelled and it really did not end properly
Two broke girls should NOT of been cancelled. Whoever makes these decisions in my opinion are not doing justice to our shows. Their putting our longtime good running shows on late at night and putting new shows on earlier. In my option keep the public watching the good shows and put the new ones on at the later hour. This is ridiculous.fGfSc
At least bring them back for a shortened 7 season. The show has a major fan base and we need closer if you’re going to take our ,”Girls” away!
2 Broke Girls was just a great funny show. The show should have renewed. The cast was fantastic & the 2 leading ladies were wonderful.
I think they should go beyond the 7th season. This is a really funny adult comedy show and being 51 can tell you this is my favorite show because they pretty much tell it like it is. Having HAN and Garret only enhances the show along with the rest of the cast and bringing Cher on would be the bomb. You said yourself that even on a not so favorable night with a lot of competition on, and putting them on at 8:30 was no help for the ratings. You need to look at all seasons and see what was… Read more »
