FOX has announced there will be no second season of 24: Legacy, at least for now. Deadline reports FOX CEO Gary Newman said that star Corey Hawkins’ commitment to the Six Degrees of Separation revival on Broadway means he’s unavailable. The thing is, had the FOX planned to renew the 24 sequel for a second season, Hawkins would have still been on contract, so it may be safe to consider 24: Legacy cancelled.
24: Legacy stars Hawkins as Eric Carter, an Army Ranger who becomes the target of a terrorist organization. The show’s cast also includes Miranda Otto, Jimmy Smits, Teddy Sears, Dan Bucatinsky, Anna Diop, Ashley Thomas, Charlie Hofheimer, Coral Pena, and Sheila Vand. The good news is, the network is opened to future installments of the 24 franchise.
24: Legacy got a huge boost in the ratings when it premiered after the Super Bowl earlier this year. However, the numbers quickly dropped afterwards. Overall, season one averaged a 1.40 rating in the 18-49 demo and 5.124 million viewers. While that seems high, the averages are skewed by the series’ post-Super Bowl numbers. 24: Legacy debuted to 17.576 million viewers and by its April finale, only 3.423 million were watching.
Even FOX chief Dana Walden was disappointed with the show’s performance. Earlier, she told Deadline:
I’m a little sad because I feel like it’s a really good show. We’re doing about 7-8 million viewers over seven days per episode. It’s not terrible. We had really high hopes for the show. Perhaps our launch strategy was a little over-ambitious.”
What do you think? Did you see 24: Legacy? Do you think the show deserved a second season?
Cindy McLennan contributed to this report.
To the writers of 24 Legacy.
1. In one of the new episodes, you should have had Jack Bauer pass the torch over to the new (Jack Bauer’s’).
2. Corey Hawkins’ did not do justice to this role. (Just my opinion.)
3. Did the Old Jack Bauer ever go to Drug Gangs or Organized Crime Gangs to help protect his family are the Country? Why did you write that in for the new Jack Bauer’s’?
4. Idris Elba would have been good for this part if he was available or Rupert Friend, who played Peter Quinn in the series Homeland.
Loved the show. Hope they re-consider and bring it back.
Definitely a great show all the way around!!
Show was great- very cool premise.
I wish Fox would uncancelled 24: Legacy. Just like NBC did with Timeless.
Bring it back!
24 Legacy should have been renewed. I liked the original 24 series better, but it was still one of my favorite shows this year and I am disappointed it was cancelled.
It’s very disappointing but not surprising since the show did not give us any characters or plots we could care about. There was no intensity. No buildup of caring of the character. I don’t know if this means it needs Jack, or commitment and passi0n to the characters, of the characters, and to the missi0ns. In the original CTU, we saw people involved with each other, who cared about each other, as well as their work. It gave us a chance to attach to them–to feel for and with them.
. It DESERVES season 2!!!..so heartbreaking ..boo to Fox!
The show had its moments but the cast just had no chemistry. I only watched to see Tony Almeida. Mann Coto supposedly has some plans for Tony to be a bigger player, in which case, YES bring it back mid-season!
Bring back Jack! Accept no substitute!
The problem was, is and always will be that 24 and any configuration of that franchise was, is and always well be JACK BAUER, first, last and none other. I personally liked this show immensely; however, it was not 24 nor shall any other permutation of the franchise ever be 24 without the inimitable original lead character. He was simply so engrained in the consciousness (in a very good way) of the 24 viewer that it would take a rebirth with that character (and, probably, Kiefer Sutherland AS that character) that the franchise and any format of the franchise must… Read more »
You hit the nail right on the head with your comments. As an original 24 die hard committed fan I was curious to see how they would pull this off…I was more disappointed than I can say all the way around and it may have been a good show had they not used the 24 logo…I don’t know as I didn’t watch past the 1st. episode…No similarity to 24 at all except in name and an actual insult to a show that had fans holding our breath for the next episode. Jack Bauer became a household name due to Keifer’s… Read more »
I liked the show. It would take at least a year for people to really like this show do to the changing of the Main Character. I think it should be renewed for a least another season.
sorry, but the PR comment about Corey Hawkins being “unavailable” because of Six Degrees is a load of crap. It’s ends during the Summer. if you read the whole press report, they said 24, if granted a season two, wouldn’t be back in the fall… it’s always been a mid-season series for awhile… something does not seem right about any of this. everyone’s from the cast and creative team has been quiet….
I agree.
I think the show should become an anthology series …. 1st from Chloe O’Brian, where she has to spend a day doing some Die Hard/reluctant hero/save the world stuff ….. then move on to some other new characters or other former 24 favorites …..
VERY interesting possible solution to the issue I raised heretofore. Might just work. Brilliant offering, onuri!!
