Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

I agree with Dee. Stop doing all ratings for 18-49 year olds. 50 and older are definitely a majority and deserve intelligent and well acted shows that do not have explosions and car chases or these phoney reality shows. Enough already!

Definately not cancelled. I love this show and look forward to seeing it each week. It’s a nice break for the reality shows, which I don’t watch. It’s a great family show that we don’t have enough of. Please Please don’t cancel it.
I really love this show. I am a medical transcriptionist and it brings out a lot of the medical things that I type on each and every day. Since I was recently diagnosed with myasthenia gravis two years ago, I was really glad you aired a recent show about this disease. Myasthenia is a rare disease and is rarely heard about. I would love to see more shows about rare diseases aired. If more people were informed of myasthenia and such rare diseases, maybe more people could be aware of these. I love this show and it can be very… Read more »
This show is so, so good! and the characters/actors are interesting and talented…please don’t cancel I rather watch this show than all the “reality shows” out there.
A gifted man helped me get through a very hard brain surgery, Dr. Holt was alot like my doctor , in fact I was sure you had wrote the show after Dr. Lawton at UCSF. anyway please keep up the great show.
This is my favorite show of the WEEK!!
There are some great shows running , lately that viewers haven’t discovered yet ! A Gifted Man ,is one of them ! It’s a good show and it shouldn’t be canceled ! But it needs some more advertisement , and viewers input and recommendations ! Peace…
This show is a gem. Wonderfully acted with heartful and moving stories, i wish more people would watch it.
I absolutely love this show. It’s the first show I’ve actually made the time to sit and watch when it first airs since season 12 or so of ER. The acting is fantastic and the writing is interesting and exciting. I really hope CBS will give them a second season.
I love this show!!!!! Please don’t cancel!!!
I don’t want it to be cancelled, but I suspect it will be.
When will advertisers realize that the largest consumer group in the country right now is baby boomers, and they are in their 60s? They have plenty of money and they’re going to be spending it for 20 more years. This live-and-die-by-18-49 thing has got to change. More people watch a new episode of Gifted Man than watch a new episode of Revenge. Look it up.
Renew, please!!
Great Show!!
Please don’t cancel this show….it’s a great family show and i’m an avid watcher.
I truly look forward to this show every week. The characters are really being developed and I wish it could just be given more time for people to find it.
