Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

I love this show, my whole family enjoys it. Please don’t cancel it!
“A Gifted Man” is one of my favorite shows. It deserves to be renewed for another year, and moved it to a night when more people watch TV. It is an excellent show that will find an audience.
Please do not cancel this show. Give it another try. I so enjoyed having something to watch on Friday nights.
Please don’t cancel. There is such junk on TV these days, why would you cancel a really good series? It’s one of the few shows worth watching.
I really hope A Gift Man will be renewed for next season. It is just starting to get really good. It takes a while for actors to grow in their characters and plots to develop. You can’t judge a show in one season. This is now where writers can get more creative. Please give it another season .
Please don’t cancell A Gifted Man. I am sure some scheduling changes can be made to put this on a different night in a different time slot. Look at how ” The Good Wife” has been moved around not to mention “The Mentalist” and other shows on CBS to fit a better demographic. Lets face it Friday has to be the worst night for viewing during the week as everyone is out because it is weekend. Sport is pretty much what is on during the weekends not to mention the endless amounts of boring reality tv I avoid at all… Read more »
CBS has many shows that should be canceled but not A Gifted Man. You should have left it in the 8:00 PM Time Slot or move it to Saturday which does not have any good programs at that time slot. I think who ever is making the decision to cancel needs their head operated on.
Sincerely,
Michael Gates
My daughter and I just started watching ‘A Gifted man’ last month and we love it
We also loved ‘Medium” Wondering how you get your ratings. No one ever asked
me. Please keep it on.
Renewed! I actually watch each week, can’t say that about most shows… the cast is great.
This is a great show, why must you guys cancel everything that is good? The family can watch this show ,and so few family shows on now that have a good story every week,so please keep the gifted man on or i will be so upset because most of tv is garbage.
A Gifted Man is one of the shows I look forward to every week. I will be disappointed to see it go, if it is canceled.
Please do not cancel the show, maybe fox should move the show to other day if they want to get more audience. The show is amazzing.
I hate to say it but, yes, I think the show should be canceled. There was no character development – who is the secretary, what’s Holt’s past, what was his relationship with his ex-wife and why the heck is her ghost popping up for no real reason other than to give some credence to the play on words with the title of the show. The shaman and doctors at the clinic – do they not have lives that we could have explored? It felt many times like the show was torn between being a Grey’s Anatomy or being more of… Read more »
Please don’t cancel A GIFTED MAN I really love this show! I love it, because it shows that life can be hard, but there are people in the world that can make a difference, and all it takes is a few good people to keep the world from falling apart. Patrick Wilson and the other actors do that for Americans. It keeps us on the edge, and then fills our hearts with love and joy. This is a gifted show! I know were all just a numbers in this world, and you say that the numbers count, well this is… Read more »
