Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

Keep the show
I don’t like the show, but since it has been second or third in the time slot each week, it seems like it should continue. Unless CBS has something much better next season that they want to waste on Friday, or Fox comes up with a show that will replace Fringe and pop A Gifted Man down to fourth and steal the older viewers who enjoy A Gifted Man.
My husband and I watch this show religiously. We truly look forward to it. The writing has been excellent, the stories are new and fresh and the actors/characters are well developed and we love them all. Please don’t cancel this show. It is the only thing on television on Friday nights of any substance. It really is very good. Please don’t cancel this show.
Great show awesome cast. I hope there is a season two.
I vote for keeping the show. My partner & I watch the show weekly. The stories are a bit outrageous, but the show’s heart is in the right place, not like House who’s too quirky by half. They do a good job contrasting the 2 clinics the top 1% and the lower 20% or so in today’s political jargon. I think the biggest problem is keeping his dead wife alive as a form of conscience; she seems to be not there mostly which makes almost unnecessary.
Please, please renew this show!!! Renew it and move it to a better night!
PLEASE RENEW THIS SHOW! ! LOVE IT
Please cancel
Cancel this turkey. The science is not up to par. And Ghost Whisper was better written. This was designed to be pap for the liberal do-gooders who do not being that “the debt must be paid.”
I really love this program. The acting is superb and the story lines great. I think its time slot puts it at a disadvantage in regards to ratings
I sincerely hope this show will not be cancelled. It is one of my favorites — good cast, excellent interesting scripts, all with real heart. please give it more time.
Looks like I’m in the minority here. I tried the show for the first 3 weeks, but found myself using the remote to check other channels. It just didn’t hold my interest. Won’t bother me a bit to see it go. I’d like to see CBS replace “A Gifted Man” with another show of the quality of “Person of Interest.”
Please do not cancell this show,i look forward to seeing it everyweek. We do not have enough good clean shows on and we need more like this one.
Please do not cancel this show!!! I look forward to Friday nights when I can sit down to watch this show. I too have a neurological condition, so I could relate to the episode where the girl had a seizure disorder. There is a little bit of something for everyone on the show.
This is a great show and I watch it every week. The great shows always get cancelled it seems. There are very few GOOD shows on anymore and the ones that usually stay on are worth the time to watch.
