Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

renewed, please!!!!!, Best show ever if people just give it a try
This is one of the few shows I really enjoyed and looked forward to. Moving it to the 9:00 slot probably didn’t help much. I enjoyed the chemistry between the cast members. At first I didn’t understand the purpose the ” ghost” but it became clear to me. People who didn’t like the show probably didn’t understand the message behind it. Don’t cancel it
I only got to see a gifted man a few times and I loved it. Please do not cancel it.
My husband and I love this show. Please do not cancel it!!
“A Gifted Man” is/was the best show on TV. Please do not cancel; there is no better show on any day of the week!!!!
We greatly enjoy the program. Please do not cancel. It’s a positive show with no violence, sex or gore.
Why do they want to cancel one of the best show??? Please don’t!
Great Show – PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL!!!!!!!
The show “A Gifted Man” is one of the lamest shows on television and loved by the “wall flower” species of today’s women. I literally lost my dinner when I watched this show with my girlfriend!!
HOPE IT RETYRNS. MY WIFE AND I REALLY LIKE IT. PLS BRING IT BACK.
Please don’t cancel. I thought this was one of CBS’ best shows on Friday night with a great story line.
Maybe it should be better advertised, to get more viewers because I know several people that have never heard of it, so if it was better promoted/ advertised for the new season maybe viewers will increase, ratings will go up. People won’t watch what they don’t know is there to watch!!!!!
Please don’t cancel the gifted man, I love it. I use to love House but it’s not very exciting anymore. The Gifted Man is soooo cute, and I love his arrogance and big heart at the same time, also I love the other cast members too!! It’s a great family show too!!! It would really upset me and my mom and several of my friends if it was cancelled. We love watching it and talking about it together!!!!! Please, please, don’t cancel!!!!!!
Please – can’t take CBS and the reality show they now have and I change the channel for that hour to watch something else. BRING BACK A GIFTED MAN TO THE FRIDAY NIGHT LINEUP!!!!
BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE “GIFTED MAN”!!!!
