Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

Please, please don’t cancel this show! I’ve watched it since the first episode and just love it. It is always very interesting and entertaining. It has so many possibilities for the future. It is one of the few really well written shows that also has terrific actors. Please give it another year, at least, to prove itself.
Give this show time to develop. I feel CBS made a mistake putting it in the 7:00 Friday timeslot. It didn’t belong there. This is a good show with good writing and good acting. Give it another year
I fell in love with this show upon first viewing. I have watched every episode not just once but time and time again. I think the ratings will take a hit now that they pitted it against Fringe and Grimm, where it had best viewership possiblities in the 7pm (CST) timeslot. But I personally have 4 tvs with 4 DVRs so I don’t have to worry. I can record and watch and watch and watch whatever I want to. This one will stay as the show I actually watch live more often than not. (The rest I can record and… Read more »
Please, please, don’t cancel this amazing series. Well written, beautifully acted,, & flawlessly cast. With the main actor playing the sexiest character I have seen on the small or for that matter big screen in years!
Finally a program with decent characters and interesting stories that’s not filled with gore and murders and police drama. Give it a chance!
I have watched A Gifted Man from the beginning and really enjoy the show and the characters. It delves into peoples’ medical and emotional lives and has helped to soften Dr Michael Holt. I see his deceased wife “Anna” as his conscience, trying to help him be more warm and caring to others instead of his direct, brusque approach. The show has rich, vibrant talent and a leap above other shows on TV. Please do not cancel the show.
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL!! I have told 4 of my friends about it and they never heard of it!. Now all of them are watching it and absolutely love the show. I think the problem is that a lot of people don’t know of the show and Friday evenings are a night that a lot of people go out to eat and start the weekend, not sit home and watch tv. If everyone of the 8 million viewers just tell one person to watch it, maybe we could save the show!
It took a little while to grow on me but I enjoy the show. Actually, my least favorite thing about is the premise it’s built on about the dead ex-wife acting like his conscience. I actually find her pretty unnecessary at this point as he seems to be growing more capable of making compassionate choices…or being shamed/guilted into them by the living people around him, rendering the ghost redundant. The fact that the dead ex-wife appears minimally in some of the episodes tells me she’s not really needed much and I would like the series just as well without her,… Read more »
Hi,
If possible I believe the show should be renewed. I work in the behavioral health system and we are currently moving towards a whole person approach to working with individuals: mental, physical and spiritual. I like the way that the medical profession, the behavioral health profession and the holistic/faith based perspectives are portrayed in the show. It’s interesting seeing the dynamics between the characters and how they are growing and learning from each other. I enjoy the show and have recommended it to my coworkers.
Sincerely,
Domingo
I love this show and watch it on the Demand feature every week! There’s so little that I look forward to watching. I hope they don’t dump it for another stupid reality show!
I hope you keep this show going – I really enjoy it and look forward to watching TV on friday nights with my 3 favourites – CSI NY, Gifted Man and Blue Bloods.
Love this show it would be a shame not to continue to watch it .
Love this show on Friday, i really like the CBS friday night lineup
The show has gotten better and better with time. The acting is excellent, and the storylines are both entertaining and interesting. They could probably do away with Dr Holt’s ghostly wife…..I’m not sure where that is going. But the rest is great. With better or more promotion, could be much bigger. Like ‘Person of Interest’, storyline possibilities are endless! It definitely deserves another season. Come on CBS, keep the faith!
Please don’t cancel the show – its just started in Australia and everybody I know who has watched it is in love with Dr Holt. More interesting than House, so give it a chance!
