Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

Please renew! Took a couple of episodes for us to get hooked but now my husband and I love the show. And we finally see Michael as a regular guy playing drums. Who knew?! And we need to see more of him and Kate getting it on!!
I love A Gifted Man, and I really want to see a second season. I’m from Argentina and I love the serie.
I love ” A Gifted Man”. Please give the show a second season to see if it catches on with more viewers. I love the characters and the story lines are great.
Please do not cancel this show. Not only its a really good show, but I have been a fan of Margo Martindale since her days on Justified. Cancel crap like 2 broke girls and Rob.
I love The Gifted Man! Please do not cancel! It’s a great show and the only tv show I look forward to every week. Great actors and storyline. It’s educational too. Give it another season!
Finally a show that doesn’t center on brainless, trashy , low class bimbos or a show with characters ruthlessly killing each other … and of course what happens ? it runs the risk of being cancelled … please do not cancel this show, it is not only interesting but very well written
Please don’t cancel “A Gifted Man.” It is well-written, intelligent, well-acted – who am I kidding? It is obviously doomed. After all, we certainly need to make room for a few more brainless comedies, heavy on smut, light on intelligence. CBS has brought out some outstanding programs – Blue Bloods, Unforgettable, Person of Interest, Hawaii 5-0. These added to the long standing ones NCIS, NCIS LA, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist make for a powerful lineup. Please don’t cancel.
Please renew A Gifted Man. I found it late, I’ve only been watching for the last month, but I have love this show. It is well written, with wonderful characters played by amazing actors and actresses. I love the humor, the drama and watching every Friday to see what is going to happen next. I was able to watch all the episodes and this in one of my new weekly shows! Please bring it back next season!!!
A medical drama that is also capable of multiple levels of character development in imaginative ways is a nice change of pace. I’m sick of the “who’s our character sleeping with this week?” premise of so many shows. They simply lack creativity. There’s every reason to give this show a chance to grow its audience for another full season.
“A Gifted Man” is the only drama series that I watch – it is the best! I watch it Friday night and sometimes again during the week. Tonights episode was amazing – I sincerely hope that this show will not be cancelled – I think it would be a big mistake!
A Gifted Man – fantastic show. Many friends are avid fans. Show too good to cancel. For a change it is a terrific family show with no worries of the nonsense that is on like the ridiculous reality shows. Again – do not cancel “A GIFTED MAN”. Thank you!!!
A Gifted Man – great show. Please do not cancel. Thank you.
Please leave the gifted man on for a second.season.it is truly a great program.all of these reality programs stink.when we get a show we really like u decide to take it off.all the actors are great in this series.keep this series on the air.
Give the show a chance, the move to 9pm was good. I really enjoy the show and know a number of people who also enjoy it. I would love to see it renewed for another season.
I really love the show A Gifted Man and would like to see it return.
I have to admit, I can’t understand the rating system. Last episode had 9.5 million viewers. That’s 3% of the entire US watching A Gifted Man. I love the show and I really want to see a second season, but I also want that so all the “rating experts” will have to bite their tongues and fingers, and actually start watching TV. Please, renew A Gifted Man. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I love the program. Please do not cancel.
