Will A Gifted Man be cancelled or renewed for a second season? As the show winds down for 2011-12, that’s the big question for fans of the CBS TV series. In a recent interview, executive producer Neal Baer shared his thoughts but first, let’s look at the show’s ratings.
For those who came in late, A Gifted Man revolves around a self-absorbed and talented surgeon who starts questioning the purpose of his life when he’s visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast includes Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The series debuted back in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.45 million total viewers. The premiere matched now-cancelled Medium’s 2010 opener in the demo but did improve in total viewership. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo.
The season to date has a 1.3 average and 8.34 million total viewers. It’s easily the network’s weakest drama — in both the demo and total viewership — even when the Friday night timelot is taken into account. Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average. With an abundance of stronger programming, A Gifted Man is certain to be cancelled after all 16 episodes have aired.
In speaking with TV Guide, Baer however remains optimistic and shared, “[CBS] really likes the show, and we haven’t talked about the future at all except trying to just do great episodes… They’re very supportive of the show and I know they really like it, so we’re very hopeful about coming back in the fall.”
Because Baer and company are betting that the show won’t be cancelled, some storylines will be left unresolved in the season finale. Baer noted, “There’s plenty to hope for and wonder about… There are definitely questions about what will happen in relationships in the future.”
What do you think? Do you think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled or renewed for season two? Should the storylines have been wrapped up in the season (likely series) finale?

Please reconsider cancelling “A Gifted Man”, it is a very enjoyable hour of TV. All the actors are extremely good. I especially like his secretary. It is a real life story. There are so many people who cannot afford a regular doctor or hospital, he takes care of the rich and the poor, without any difference. He’s a very good looking young man, and plays his part so well, it seems real. Not like most of the junk that is on TV. Murder cases, rapes. Silly ones like How I Met Your Mother ( by now who cares) and the… Read more »

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL “A GIFTED MAN” I LOVE THAT SHOW….
I have had an aneurism and this serie enlightsme about this strange injury
I have watched way too much TV all my life. I am not impressed much by TV anymore. I hate cop shows and medical dramas. There are way too many. Here’s the thing, I totally love this show. The stories are great. The characters are great. It’s the only show I recommend and the only show I want religiously.
Real Solid Show…….I always watch or DVR it……L
please DO NOT CANCEL Gifted Man. this is one of the most intriging shows on tv. the highlite of friday nite tv. I remember a time when networks gave shows time to develop and ended up making tons of money off them.unfortunatley network television appears to be following the trend found in pro and college sports, that of ‘instant gradifacatuon’. mabey gifted man could be sold to cable.
“A GIFTED MAN” should most definitely renewed. Do not wrap up the storylines so we have hope that it will indeed be back. This is one of the best shows on television, and one that I’m not uncomfortable watching with my kids. The lessons are subtle, the characters are people we care about. Too much blood, gore, and violence on other programs. Please, CBS, continue to bring us a show to look forward to on Fridays.
Keep it.It’s a great show.
CBS’s mistake was billing it as “in thes pirit of ghost whisperer and medium”
As far as i’m concerned it’s not a ghost show.Anna is barely in most episodes. She’s there to wake him up to himself, like the shrink said to michael in the “letting go” episode.
It deserves a second chance,I’ve seen worse shows get renewed, and this is one of my favorite shows.
Please keep the show “A Gifted Man”. I really enjoy it and I seldom watch medical shows. The writing is excellent and the characters are well developed. You really begin to care about the characters and anticipate what will happen next. I like the spirit of the dead ex wife it gives the storyline an interesting twist, and the relationship with the main character and the new female doctor is compelling. I’m disappointed that the season finale is so early. Please bring back this show for the fall, it is excellent.
Please do not cancel A Gifted Man. Great show. Nice change from all violence.
Please, please don’t cancel this show. This is one of the best shows I have seen on TV
for a long time. It has wonderful stories about people helping other people with
heartwarmring stories. Love Patrick Wilson and rest of cast.
Please do not cancel The Gifted Man. It is my favorite show and wait for it each week.
I absolutely adore this show. After the pilot, I wasn’t too sure about it but soon after I fell in love with it. I’m looking forward to the season finale and at the same time dreading it as it could be the last. Fingers & toes crossed for a second season.
My husband and I like gifted man please don’t cancel it.
