This evening marks the last episode of A Gifted Man of the season. Will the TV show be back for a second season or will it be cancelled by CBS?
A Gifted Man follows the life of Michael Holt (Patrick Wilson), a talented but selfish surgeon who begins to change his point of view after being visited by the spirit of his deceased ex-wife. The cast also includes Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The show premiered in September to a disappointing 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.45 million total viewers. Week two saw Gifted Man drop to a 1.2 in the demo and 8.18 million. The numbers stayed at those levels for several weeks but then perked up to a 1.3 in the demo. Rather than give the series a full season order, CBS added just three installments.

Last month, CBS moved the show to 9pm. The time change seemed to help the first week but last Friday’s installment dropped back to the usual 1.3 demo rating. Undercover Boss, which took over the 8pm timeslot, has been doing significantly better than the drama.
The season to date has a 1.3 demo average with 8.50 million total viewers. It’s CBS’ weakest drama in both the demographic and total viewers, even when you adjust for the Friday night timeslot. To put things in perspective, Medium was cancelled with a 1.4 demo average.
If A Gifted Man was on NBC, the network would no doubt be considering a renewal. That’s not the case of course. CBS has the largest number of successful shows and, for whatever reason, A Gifted Man just didn’t find a big enough audience. It’s sure to be cancelled sometime between now and May.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see A Gifted Man leave the schedule? Why do you think it didn’t catch on with a bigger audience?

It took me a couple of episodes to warm up to Gifted Man. Now it’s on my list of “must views” every week (and that list has only 4 shows on it!) I hope it’s spared, and I hope the writers caffeine-up for the 2nd season. The show has the groundwork to be great; weave in some creative storylines and keep the fans CARING! I hope I’ll see GM back in September, leading into my weekly Tom Selleck fix!
Funny how finally there’s an intelligent show with character, well written and heart warming and CBS decides to cancel it. Must agree with ginny, this show should be kept or picked up by another station, maybe even cable, just like others that continue to have the deserved success. The actors are wonderful and so much can still be written. The story should go on.
A gifted man is the only show I regularly watch on TV. I agree with “anonymous,” if CBS cancels the show, I’m going to stop watching it.
I love A Gifted Man. I used to watch a lot of TV, but I had to whittle things down. So now I watch only two shows, A Gifted Man and Grimm. I will be very sad if A Gifted Man doesn’t come back. I can’t explain why but there is just something about it that keeps you coming back again and again. Probably Patrick Wilson. He is so perfect in this.
I have been watching A gifted man from the beginning and don`t want it to end 🙁 Please do another season!!! Someone please continue with this show. I hate it when good series start and then they end quick!
I love the gifted man it better now go off, I am sick of seeing my shows go off, first my soaps now this….stop!!
I too, really enjoy this show. It’s a shame that I doubt CBS cares enough about “8 million people” to keep the show on, or to scour these boards looking for opinions on whether to keep the show or not…In an age with so much DVR, Tivo, Internet, etc., those “demographic ratings” are so out of date and undependable.
Ditto! Shame on you CBS, hopefully NBC will pick up this series if you choose to cancel.
We would hate to see this show cancelled. It is one of the best written, superbly acted drama’s. I cannot believe it would lose out to another reality show or situation comedy for that matter. Hope you give this series one more season at least to show it can make the ratings.
Again, another excellent, well acted drama with a unique twist is under attack. Any time an intelligent, thought provoking show is put on, it loses out to another reality show, or an inane situation comedy. Doesn’t say much for the viewing public. I have seen show after show being cancelled, and replaced with yet another show that isn’t worth the time that would be wasted watching it. Shame on you, CBS. Maybe one season you’ll have the guts to keep on an excellent show and not consign it to the trashbin.
Of course CBS will cancel it. The show is too intelligent for the average viewer. Talking smart like, can’t keep a show on the air. It’s really depressing. Anytime there’s a great thought provoking show it gets cancelled (see Saved and Eli Stone). Plus CBS, it doesn’t help that 1/2 the season was re-runs. Good Lord. Have more than 5 episodes in your pocket before you try to fill 15 weeks! Geesh!
I love gifted man! And I think Patrick Wilson is wonderful! So, is the rest of the cast. It would be a big mistake to cancel it.
How can CBS cancel a snow like A Gifted Man and continue to show garbage like NCIS Miami & Survivor. It made Friday night worth watching. Not everyone is into reality shows which are jokes.
Of course this will be canceled!! Only since i frifggin love this show! Weather it be Cbs Nbc or any other network I’m sure to follow! Please don’t cancel it!
The show is a bit weak. Same sort of theme as the ghost whisper. Just think that these dead spouses coming back gets a little old. If this show survives the red-head dead wife must be history. Ready for CSI:NY to return during that time slot. Miss Gary and team.
A Gifted Man, one of our favorite shows on TV. CBS please don’t cancell this show! !!!!!
