Though it’s pulled in less-than-impressive ratings, CBS has ordered three additional episodes of A Gifted Man.
Airing on Friday nights, A Gifted Man revolves around a talented and self-absorbed upscale surgeon (Patrick Wilson) who begins to change his view on life when he’s visited by the ghost of his dead ex-wife (Jennifer Ehle). Others in the series include Julie Benz, Liam Aiken, Margo Martindale, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, and Eriq La Salle.
The newbie series has been averaging a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.35 million viewers. It’s the lowest-rated show on the network and has been doing worse in the all-important demo than now-cancelled Medium did a year earlier. On the positive side however, Gifted Man typically pulls in twice as many viewers as the show’s competitors on any of the other networks.
CBS has ordered three additional episodes of A Gifted Man, bringing the season total to 16 installments. That’s a far cry from a full season order and, unless things improve, it’s difficult to imagine that the network will order a second season.
Three of the network’s other new shows — 2 Broke Girls, Person of Interest and Unforgettable — received full season pickups while How To Be A Gentleman was quickly cancelled. CBS hasn’t announced their mid-season schedule yet so it’s unknown what the network will put in A Gifted Man’s timeslot when the series has completed its run.
What do you think? Should CBS order more episodes of A Gifted Man or cancel it when the current season is finished?

I just starting watching this show, and I loved it. Since I missed the first 6 shows, I downloaded all shows from the beginning (on ITunes). I have now watched all episodes a few times over. It’s emotional and funny. The actors are superb. It’s the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I look forward to Friday nights. Keep this show on the air!!
One of the few shows I really look forward to. Canceling it would be a mistake.
A Gifted Man is one of my favorite shows. I have watched it from day one. We don’t have too many dramas now. It is well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way until the end.
CBS will make a big mistake if they were to end this show. It didn’t come on this past Friday and I didn’t watch anything else. I got on the computer!
This is evidently the top show in this time slot. Why would CBS want to cancel? It is definitely a keeper!
A Gifted Man is a wonderful show. Please give it a full season order. It’s one of the rare intelligent dramas on TV. Very engaging.
We love this show, Fridays are very slow for tv ratings so they should send this show to other day. But anyway, they need to keep it!!
My husband and I really enjoyed watching The Gifted Man. It would be a terrible shame if it didn’t come back on. We actually sat down tonight to watch it and were very disappointed that it wasn’t on.
Please CBS give this show a chance. I am telling other’s about it as well. It is so well acted, scripted and a pleasure to watch. People over 40 are begging for good shows like this. We are so TIRED of the junk that is on TV. Make us want to stay home and watch
TV again..
I wish people weren’t so lazy and dumb. The reason for the low ratings is that so few people want to watch a show where you need to be actively engaged. Trash TV like ‘Dancing With the Stars’ gets a ridiculous number of viewers, but high-quality thought-provoking TV pulls in significantly less. It’s unfortunate. I’d be disappointed if ‘A Gifted Man’ doesn’t get to come back for a full second season.
I recently started watching it and I am hooked. I love this show.
This is such a great show. Well written, well acted and engaging. Such a refreshing show compared with the rest of what is on serial TV. Please keep this show going. Move it to a better time slot and keep developing the medical serial drama story line. I love that they play Jennifer’s role more as Michael’s “conscience”, rather than too “other worldly.” Well done. Just keep doing more! and please, please keep this show on the air. It is really one of the best on right now!
Let’s give it a chance. Remember Friday Night Lights?
“A Gifted Man” needs to be renewed. It’s one of more interesting shows on CBS and TV in general, even for a medical show. Nothing like it so far. It needs to be renewed for a 2nd season. Worse comes to worse, CBS could sell it to TNT since “The Closer” is ending, and Southland moved from NBC and has been doing MUCH better than when it was on NBC.
I thought 8.5 million viewers during the Friday night window was actually rather impressive. Well-written show.
Sorry I forgot to add that canceling “A Gifted Man” would be a a huge mistake. This show is one of the best dramas to hit television in a long time. It’s not about sex and murder. It’s about relatable reality. We need more shows like this. Time to move on from the reality show generation to a generation of shows with substance behind it.
