ABC did well with How to Get Away with Murder on Thursdays at 10pm. Now that Murder’s first season is over, they’ve replaced it with American Crime, an anthology series that will focus on a new crime each season — presuming the ratings are strong enough for it to be renewed. Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned to find out.
On the first season of American Crime, a home invasion in Modesto, California results in the murder of war veteran Matt Skokie and a horrific assault on his wife Gwen. Four suspects are brought into custody for the crimes. Though the suspects and the victims fit a profile, they and their situations are far more complicated than anyone would have initially believed. The cast includes Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, W. Earl Brown, Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, Benito Martinez, Penelope Ann Miller, Elvis Nolasco, Johnny Ortiz, and Regina King.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/8 update: American Crime has been renewed for a second season.
Final season averages: 1.16 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.98 million total viewers.

The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the American Crime TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Love this cast, please give us a Season 4
American Crime was great. I’m happy that the show was renewed for another season. The show shows you how complicated crimes can be in our society.
I am absolutely thrilled that American Crime has been renewed for a second season!!! Love this show, the acting is superb! No fairy tale endings just realistic down to earth raw life. Smart choice of actors for each role. I would love to see Elvis Nolasco (Carter Nix) in another TV drama, he is one terrific actor! Can’t wait for the second season to begin. Highly recommend this show!!!
I am absolutely thrilled to hear that American Crime has been renewed for a second season!!!! Love, love, love this show! The storyline is so realistic and down to earth. It is not your typical happy ever after make believe storyline. This is real life, realistic and raw! The acting is wonderful, very well written and smart choice for each actor that was chosen. I would love to see these actors appear in other TV dramas in the future, especially Elvis Nolasco ( he is one terrific actor!)
Omg omg omg!!!!! This show is one of the best shows ever on TV! In all my years of TV viewing I have to admit this is probably the best! I strongly encourage all who haven’t seen it to watch it ASAP! Never has a TV show touched me like how American Crime has touched me and appealed to my senses. The emotion, the rawness , the realism, the acting, the story. This show has something for everyone no matter what your race or your background is, you will be able to relate. Especially living in America! Not only should… Read more »
this series was phenomenal and I am very happy it is returning – well done!
I found the show to be incredibly emotionally engaging and the actors were all fabulous. The story was completely believable and casts a little light on the dark and despairing world of those who have made (or been compelled into) bad life decisions.
I like the concept of American Crime — new characters and a new crime to be solved each season. This first season was a heart-wrenching roller coaster ride. There was no way for there to be a happy ending. Will be watching next season.
I really enjoyed the series but can’t believe the finale. Totally disappointing. Who killed Matt and tried to kill Gwen? The finale was doing so well, wrapping up the fates of the characters…then ends so lame. Is it me, or are there others out there who are as confused as I am as to who the killer was?
You are not alone, Sherry. I am trying to revisit the episodes to see the connections. I believe Aubrey and her boy friend killed Matt and tried to kill Gwen. I’m not sure how the Hispanic character with all of the tattoos fit into the weave. I think he was present at one of the killings,, either of Matt but more likely the drug dealer where Aubrey or her boy friend killed the dealer. I really have to understand where the young boy who beat up his sister’s assailant fit into the sequence. It may have started with his giving… Read more »
Thank goodness, I thought that it was just me who could not quite figure out exactly what happened. While at the end it did not really matter because all of the families involved were the ones who injured the most, I was never sure who the actual murder was. I could not get the idea out of my head that Hector Tonz, the first person that you see was the actual villian of the piece. In the very first scene, wanted for murder in Mexico, is seen fencing stolen goods that he nevery explained, and I figured that they were… Read more »
A beautiful comment. Not sure I agree with your conclusions, but you certainly made me re-think everything. No show needs a neat ending that answers every question. That goes back to The Lady and the Tiger. The questions will always hang in the air, never neatly answered, something like, say, life.
Carter killed Matt and I believe Hector
was involved due to the
drugs/gang related involvement. Carter did what he had to for Aubrey’s drug addiction. The ending was over the top and too emotional for me, however I have to step back and look at the reality of gangs, drugs along with mental illness/addiction and recognize there is a lot of power within it and IT’S messy. I do think this story was cut short, yet again so were the lives of those involved in the story.
I think American Crime is an excellent show! The situations, the approaches, the characters — I believe it all presented a very good picture of the implications and complexities of crime in the diverse America in which we live today. Kudos to the writers and to the fabulous work of the cast. I am very glad there will be a second season. Count me in every week.
“picture of the implications and complexities of crime in the diverse America in which we live today” you mean Hollywoods’s over the top, dimestore novel version of supposed life in America
This is one of the most compelling shows television has ever aired. It is troubling and actually makes one think about many aspects of crime. The impact of drugs, racism and bigotry is far reaching and can affect every single person in a community. This is a story that needed to be seen by the American Public. If 4 million people watched each week, it was most likely a very educated audience……………..and most likely serious watchers, not entertainment seekers. Thank you for renewing. I look forward to the next season to see how the next crime is explored – in… Read more »
I think the show is compelling. And accurately displays the struggles that different Americans face everyday. If you think the story line is dark and depressing go watch a disney movie. As for a season 2? I certainly hope there is one. Id hate to have these characters disappear and forever leave me wondering what happened to them.
It ain’t about the actors it’s about the effect of crimes on families in America and the families of those who are party to those crimes. Fine a few accents are off but if you’ve ever been to prison or jail you’d appreciate the truth in the struggle these originally regular families went threw. I remember when my mom learned the difference between jail and prison. I also remember when my cousin was arrested and she was giving bail and bond and charge advice because after 6 felonies she knows enough about the legal system to be a lawyer. It’s… Read more »
American crime chose the cast for the minorities all wrong, the ignorance of Hollywood is huge, they have as the daughter of the Chicano character[ American born of many generations in what is now USA ] a Dominican mulato, [black and white] that has her own accent , a black character that is American is also played by another Dominican actor Elvis Nolasco, all have their own accents that do not match the characters, no matter how good actors are. Learn from the British , they find actors to fit characters not the other way around. On the other hand… Read more »
Carla — with all due respect, I disagree with you. With the mix in which we live today –here in the United States and just about everywhere in the world — couldn’t the daughter of the Chicano have had as mother a Dominican woman – hence her looks and her accent? Any interracial possibility is a given any more. How about, as another example, an first-generation oriental woman that when she speaks, she has the most noticeable Latin American accent (as does a friend of mine)? I have seen and heard every imaginable mix. There is nothing wrong with trying… Read more »
I think the show should 100 percent have another season one of best shows on tv
