ABC did well with How to Get Away with Murder on Thursdays at 10pm. Now that Murder’s first season is over, they’ve replaced it with American Crime, an anthology series that will focus on a new crime each season — presuming the ratings are strong enough for it to be renewed. Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned to find out.
On the first season of American Crime, a home invasion in Modesto, California results in the murder of war veteran Matt Skokie and a horrific assault on his wife Gwen. Four suspects are brought into custody for the crimes. Though the suspects and the victims fit a profile, they and their situations are far more complicated than anyone would have initially believed. The cast includes Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, W. Earl Brown, Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, Benito Martinez, Penelope Ann Miller, Elvis Nolasco, Johnny Ortiz, and Regina King.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/8 update: American Crime has been renewed for a second season.
Final season averages: 1.16 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.98 million total viewers.

Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the American Crime TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
The show started off slow but has really gained momentum. I am really enjoying it and hope to see another season.
This show is ground breaking. It lets the viewer understand, relate, and sympathize with everyone involved in a crime and how their ethnicity effects their views. The unbiased way the director captured the story makes the viewer have to formulate their own opinions on characters. This is the smartest show on television and it astounds me that it might be canceled. It’s disappointing that people would rather watch shows like “blackish” instead of this intriguing drama that deals with real life issues.
This show is getting better. Cant wait to see the next episode.
Watching these two drug addicts is tedious. I like the rest of the story but these long drug escapades are killing me.
I guess this show isn’t going to get renewed and that is too bad because I think it really raises some very painful issues about race, class, family, prison, etc. I think the acting is really good. No, there are not really too many likeable characters on this show, but that is often the case in life. Barb is so cold and rigid that she is simply painful to watch — good acting on the part of Felicity Huffman. Timothy Hutton, great as usual. The other characters are almost as painful to watch. The religious self-righteous father, the druggie teens… Read more »
I like it. it reminds me of the shield. Regina king…Emmy time
Timothy Hutton.
completely wasted in this thing
Great show with some good performances.
Nice to see a gritty show on network TV again.
I see some posters are uncomfortable with this type of program, but guess what folks, this is the real world and things like this are happening every day.
If this is not your cup of tea, there’s always Downton Abbey and a handful of those fantasy and comic book shows!
Felicity Huffman’s character, Barb, is just unbearable to watch! Great performances by Benito Martinez & Johnny Oritz though!
saw a clip of this show. Timothy Hutton OWNED the room just sitting there. and then the other three characters had to open their mouths and lets us know how lousy the acting, story and everything else is about this show.
This isn’t an altogether bad show but Felicity Huffman’s character, Barb, is beyond annoying and unlikeable. I’ve sat through two episodes thinking “why couldn’t SHE have been the one who got murdered?”. She’s just awful in every way. There’s no way I can have a single amount of sympathy for her. Every one is her enemy, her life was so bad so she has the right to take it out on every one else, she knows best how others should grieve and what they should and shouldn’t do and she knows the truth no matter what. I’d really like to… Read more »
The parents played by Felicity and Timothy aren’t very likeable people. I just don’t want to be around them. I stopped watching about 20 minutes into the first episode. Too much out there to waste my time. The worst BBC import is better than this.
I made it through the first episode, but that was enough. Similar to what Ellen said, I just couldn’t tolerate the prospect of spending another minute watching these toxic characters. Life is too short. A shame, too, because I like Tim Hutton’s work, generally.
CANCEL IT ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE NETWORK, ABC SHOWS SUCK…
I had a hard time with episode 1, it seemed a bit scattered but perhaps showing some spark by the end. But I’m not sure if I taped episode 2 or not. If not, I’ll just move on and if it survives the year finish up with it then.
I’ll watch it again. I believe there may be potential for developing Felicity Huffman & Timothy Bottom’s characters.
My family & I love the show. We will hate to see it go! I really look forward to Thursdays, can’t wait to see what happens next. Alot of you don’t like Barb but I think she does great job playing the role. My son died less then yr ago, though he wasn’t murdered like this I can really relate. No one knows how they’d react until they are in that situation themself. I think I’d react same way. Great acting!
