ABC did well with How to Get Away with Murder on Thursdays at 10pm. Now that Murder’s first season is over, they’ve replaced it with American Crime, an anthology series that will focus on a new crime each season — presuming the ratings are strong enough for it to be renewed. Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned to find out.
On the first season of American Crime, a home invasion in Modesto, California results in the murder of war veteran Matt Skokie and a horrific assault on his wife Gwen. Four suspects are brought into custody for the crimes. Though the suspects and the victims fit a profile, they and their situations are far more complicated than anyone would have initially believed. The cast includes Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, W. Earl Brown, Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, Benito Martinez, Penelope Ann Miller, Elvis Nolasco, Johnny Ortiz, and Regina King.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/8 update: American Crime has been renewed for a second season.
Final season averages: 1.16 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.98 million total viewers.

Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the American Crime TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
If ABC isn’t smart enough to renew this show I hope a cable network will pick it up. They should try shopping it to the OWN network. It’s a shame crap like The Big Bang Theory draws huge numbers, but a show this smart lacks a larger audience.
Doubt it will be renewed but it should be. The acting is of course good—Emmy nominations coming—but the direction and the editing are truly unique. For those that object that it is dark, well duh. The subject is dark but the same is true of every crime drama on TV. It is the best drama currently on TV and I pray it is renewed.
Completely agree. Great acting. Love how it showcases the complex relationships and lives of those involved. Would love to see a Season 2.
This show is fantastic. It is thought provoking and extremely well-acted. Are all the characters likable — no — in fact, all of them have their flaw — just like real human beings. But it raises important societal issues: race, gender, justice system, etc. If the second season deals with another crime, let us hope that the writing and acting are as compelling as this season. Maybe cable or Netflix should pick up this show because those venues are definitely not afraid of edgy shows.
This a show which has little ambiguity about liking or disliking its story. I really hope the “keep this show” group wins. It is compelling and well done in every aspect. The acting is fantastic and the writing is compelling. It deserves a second season.
I absolutely love this show!!! Keep it!!!!
Too depressing. What a total downer. Nothing about this show is redeeming in any way
The actors are amazing, but who wants to waste an hour of our brief lives wallowing in such a dark, dark story when all we have to do is pick up a newspaper or turn on the news if that is what we want to fill our minds and souls with. Gross! There has got to be something better in the way of entertainment for the viewing audience.
People need to see this type of stuff in a perceptive not manipulate by the news. Its honest truth. Maybe dark but this is what is going on in the world behind the scenes.
I agree! This show needs to stay on! It’s gritty, but truth-filled!
The directors, writers, casts, & crew did an outstanding job portraying our world views & showing different angles…
Must keep!
I’m curious to see what they can do with Season 2!
I hope ABC make a good decision and gives this show a second season. It has great acting, a complex storyline and is thought provoking. My boss and I talk about it each week after watching and the show really makes you think about everything from crime, victims and race. ABC, KEEP THIS SHOW!!!!!!
this show is awesome. Great acting by all. Excellent show !!!! Love it
This show is a lot like THE WIRE—a complex, almost anatomical examination of crime—from perps to cops to victims to justice system to penal system and political ramifications, but with a far more diverse cast.
And similar to THE WIRE, nobody’s all good, nobody’s all bad. Felicity Huffman is incredible she’s the kinda of racist most of us encounter—more insidios than that cartoonish klansman or skinhead. Her character’s far more damaging.
There’s lots of great acting throughout. But if the ratings keep falling, I dunno if it’ll get renewed.
Fantastic acting. Please do not cancel!!!
Great show, great acting
This show should Not be canceled . It is the first show on ABC that makes older adults talk about the situations I our country. Older adults need to know what the world is really like out there. 65 and older didn’t have to face these type of experiences in middle America. It’s telling a story that opens up many conversations. Keep it on ! TV needs this !
This is a terrible show!!!
as smokey robinson and the miracles would sing – I second that emotion
Why? You hate a show because it tells the truth about the world we live in
Best show with GREAT actors. What is wrong America? Perhaps cable should pick up.
This may be the best show on network tv… Yeah, it started out a bit slow, but the best shows often do, because they are smart enough to actually lay a foundation on which to build a great story with rich, fully developed characters… The acting is phenomenal… Felicity Huffman deserves an Emmy, her character is so difficult to watch! Richard Cabral is riveting…so believable as a street thug/target who has learned the hard way how to look out for number one… Regina King, as Carter’s sister, is doing such great work… All of the actors in this show are… Read more »
I agree with you Nik, and I think this is a great show. It gives me that realistic feel like Rectify does on Starz channel by Robert Redford. These sorts of stories make us take a look at real life and its impact on us. Life isn’t always cheerful, there is a lot of sorrow in peoples lives and this show gives us a view from every angle. I look forward to watching this complex story every week.
This is the slowest show I’ve ever watch like watching paint dry
