NBC is saying goodbye to The Carmichael Show. Deadline reports the network has cancelled the TV show after three seasons.
Loosely inspired by the life of star and co-creator Jerrod Carmichael, the comedy follows a North Carolina family that consists of Jerrod (Carmichael), his old-school dad, Joe (David Alan Grier), devout mom, Cynthia (Loretta Devine), progressive girlfriend, Maxine (Amber Stevens West), and brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery).
NBC confirmed the cancellation of The Carmichael Show after Jerrod Carmichael announced he was leaving the sitcom to pursue other projects:
For three seasons (okay 2.5), I got to make a show that I love with my friends. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was 13. Now, I’m excited to go make other things that I love. Thank you to every person who worked on or watched The Carmichael Show.“
Ratings for The Carmichael Show have declined over the past couple seasons. So far, season three is averaging a rating of .78 in the 18-49 demo and 3.681 million viewers, making it one of NBC’s lower-rated series for the 2016-2017 season.
However, despite low ratings, The Carmichael Show earned significant critical praise for its examination of current social and political issues. Nevertheless, is looks like NBC is moving on. The network released a statement regarding the cancellation, thanking the cast and crew of the TV series:
We are enormously proud of The Carmichael Show and Jerrod’s talent and vision to do a classic family sitcom that also taps into issues and relevant stories from the real world. We thank and salute the cast, crew, and producers — and especially Jerrod — for three critically acclaimed seasons.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Carmichael Show? Are you sad it’s ending?
NBC has a habit of killing good shows before they can mature, and this show falls into that realm. I knew that it was dead when they moved it to Sunday night, where shows go to die. The Carmichael Show was some of the best TV on the air, and it was sabotaged.
Agree, Agree, Agree!!!
It really wasn’t that amusing
This is honestly depressing this show is beyond exceptional and really handled tough issues with tact and humor that I haven’t seen since The Chappelle Show and before that In Living Color it was wonderful to see a sitcom about a black family’s perspective on current events and issues facing this country I hope Jerrod pitches this show to Netflix or TNT because the people deserve The Carmichael Show. Just because NBC cannot handle it doesn’t mean that we cannot maybe ABC can pick it up and it can come on after Black-ish. But to cancel this show for good… Read more »
You’ve said it all: The Carmichael Show is the best sitcom since Seinfeld. I’ve sampled many over the last 30+ years but most made me cringe so I never became a fan. This year’s Life in Pieces is worthy and I watch it regularly, but it doesn’t make me laugh the way Carmichael does AND I don’t really learn stuff on it like I do when I watch Carmichael. I’m old and white and I’ll be a Jerrod Carmichael fan forever. I’ve already been a Loretta Devine fan since Boston Public back in the ’90s (I think). Another network should… Read more »
I liked the show, and will be sorry it’s not coming back..
I loved this show for tackling real issues. There was humor injected into seriousness without it negating the point being made. Yes characters were painted with broad strokes but this is the families & the type of world we live in. I wish Jerrod good luck with future endeavors.
And please do NOT replace this with some other idiot reality show. I am sick to death of people who have no skills or talent being made millionaires for showing their stupidity on TV. They speak to the lowest common denominator of society & make our education system seem non-existent.
Right on, Redshoes2!
The cancellation of The Carmichael Show is a reflection of our inability to face issues of race, gender and sexuality.
Our preference is to watch garbage disguised as “reality TV”.
No wonder the rest of the world is laughing at us…
I’m like Deanna Griffin a “mature white women” who finds the writing and characters to be refreshing and real. I have to wonder who made the STUPID call to put them on a night that was setup for failure, because that person needs to get kicked in the ass!!! I’ll be a Jerrod Carmichael fan forever.
I knew it wasn’t gonna last. Between them making 6-ep ssns and airing a ssn in 3 wks. I enjoyed the show, but could’ve enjoyed it more if it wasn’t for that. And I do like that they discussed topics, but having their own stories and problems would’ve been great too. Don’t get too many shows like this, ever. I think they were starting to balance it this ssn, then boom. AMAZING cast, hope to see Amber Stevens in something soon.
I love this show !! Here’s a decent show ! So they keep the show’s that evil and not anymore family show’s!!!!!!
I wish Tiffany Haddish and Rel Howery Good luck, they are gems!
I love The Carmichael Show! It’s one of the few TV shows that actually makes me laugh. I’m sad that it’s been cancelled.
I’m guessing that everyone on the show wanted REAL MONEY and NBC isn’t going to pay that for a summer show that isn’t a reality show.
We liked this show and appreciated how they talked about current issues from different perspectives. Too bad that most of society wants “reality” TV crap instead of a well done, open-minded, thought provoking show.
I am so disappointed! I love this show! I think it is hysterically funny, thought provoking with wonderful acting and writing. It is truly one of my favorite television shows ever and I am seventy years old and have been watching television for a long time! Lots of kudos should go to Jerrod Carmichael for this innovative and groundbreaking show. I wish him much luck in his future endeavors. I will keep an eye out for any future projects he is a part of, but I will definitely miss Jerrod, Maxine, Joe, Cynthia, Bobby and Nekeisha. It was a pleasure… Read more »
There shouldn’t have been a season 2 or 3
There was. This is the third season.
You missed my point
This is/was a good show. They had shows about many issues that other shows shied away from and presented them in ways that were honest, open-minded and sometimes with surprisingly differing opinions and perspectives than one might expect. Good job!
