Last season, CBS tried to establish new shows but almost all of them were cancelled due to low ratings. No new dramas survived and only two sitcoms did. Which shows will be cancelled or renewed this time? We’ll have wait and see.
CBS shows this season (so far): 2 Broke Girls, 48 Hours, 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, Battle Creek, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Blue Bloods, The Briefcase, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Cyber, Elementary, Extant, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, The McCarthys, The Mentalist, Mike & Molly, The Millers, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, The Odd Couple, Person of Interest, Scorpion, Stalker, Survivor, Two and a Half Men, Under the Dome, Undercover Boss, and Zoo.
There’s lots of data that CBS looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
CBS ratings continue to drop
Will be eternally bummed if POI gets dumped. Easily the smartest most original network tv in a long time. I don’t think it lost much mojo, just a couple hiccups. Still far superior to the csi/criminal minds murder porn procedural snoozefests. How many times can they say unsub and wheels up in 30 in an episode anyway?
POI has lost more than 50 percent of its audience in the last two years, so a large portion of viewers disagree with you. and the ratings are getting worse by the week. If this sticks around one more year, which it is supposed to do for syndication, it will be below 1.0, That means Mon, Fri or Sun nite at 10pm, or a mid-season or summer burn off, No way CBS keeps a show that low rated Tues thru Thur at 9 or 10 pm. same for elementary, it is supposed to have one more year and its rating… Read more »
I assume you’re comparing Elementary ratings from last year to POI ratings from this year?? Since Elementary hasn’t started yet.
no poi ratings for this year compared to those it had when carter was killed. elementary doesn’t even enter the equation. In 2012 POI had a 2.9/3,0 rating or close to it, it is now 1,5/1.6
Friday night is a bad night to count viewers. I would be happy if CBS switched Boring Survivor with My All Time favorite TAR!
Numbers need to be changed to reflect Nielsen glitch
To my knowledge, only five shows have seen changes from the restated numbers — Modern Family, SHIELD, Once Upon a Time, Nashville and Revenge. All ABC shows. Nielsen has only released restated numbers for the first week of the season so far (9/22-9/28/14).
Wow. Everything is falling BIG TIME except CM, TGW, NCIS and TBBT.
Wonder how many others will be renewed. 😐
There sure are a lot of red numbers on the above ratings chart. That can’t be good. What will CBS do about these shortcomings or is the lack of positive reception to its programming becoming an accepted norm? Do advertisers find these failing ratings numbers disturbing and what are the repercussions?
I’ve seen rationalizations that DVD, foreign market, syndication deals and later date viewing numbers matter. Do they count as much as same day viewing reports?
things will be worse next year for CBS because some of these shows will be back for year four or five for syndication deals with even lower ratings. (elementary, blue bloods, and POI and even good wife and 5-0)
then they go off the air and cbs will have to launch several new shows trying to lure viewers back.
CBS, just order 5 seasons of NCIS NOLA now!
yeah, so they can have another older skewing show that will see horrible ratings in year three.
Ncis NO yes, very good show.
Ncis LA- if the ratings are horrible, no wonder, it’s a horrible show.
NO numbers are worse than LA’s compared to this time last year. LA had 2.6/7 and NO has 2.3/4 demo. and LA’s number are comparable to all of CBS’ other 10 pm shows. so if LA is so bad, how is it that it had better numbers than NO? and how is it getting the same numbers a POI, Stalker, Blue Bloods etc?So if LA is bad at 1.6, what does that say about POI and Stalker with their 1.6? not saying LA is good or bad. just saying if it is bad, then the others must be as well… Read more »
I will watch very little CBS programming until it reflects the social diversity of the world. CBS has a strong tendency to be racist, sexist and completely out of touch with reality. As long as CBS and Hollywood continue to perpetuate the fairytale-like ideas of how the world should look and function, with no attention to actuality, ratings will reflect this tragic oversight.
koombyah my lord, koombyah
so don’t watch.
I don’t know what koombya is but it looks like a lot of people are not watching CBS for a lot of reasons. Maybe bad shows?
Sounds to me that you don’t want to watch ANY television. You talk about out of touch with reality? That would be NBC and ABC! Two networks that constantly depict men (especially WHITE men) as being stupid and totally dependent on any female that comes near by (that would qualify as “sexist”). They show women in physically impossible roles (I sure wouldn’t want a 120 pound female trying to carry me down a ladder from the second story of a burning building … I don’t care how “tough” she is.) which, I guess, could be construed as “out of touch… Read more »
I really hope NCIS: New Orleans is canceled though it probably won’t be because of its ratings. The only thing exciting about it was its venue. The characters and plot were more boring than I anticipated, and it bumped NCIS: LA to possibly the worst timeslot available. LA’s first episode had 18 million, closer to 19 million. Of course their ratings were going to drop paired next to shows like Castle (which has a HUGE follower base) and The Blacklist (which is new but has a ton of potential).
I love NCIS New Orleans, it’s slow to get started but it will be awesome!
CBS continues to under perform. Season and new show premiers below expectations. following week episodes seeing large ratings drop offs….. TBBT and football otherwise bombs away
CBS is going to have more problems this year than just POI
In an earlier post Karen James hits the nail right on the head….Person Of Interest was not broken and whoever has orchestrated these changes needs to “go stand in the corner” and let the original writers (or their mentors) rewrite and put this series back together before time expires.
As I said earlier “It isn’t broken (or at least it wasn’t) so stop trying to “fix it”.
CBS, please wake up and make the changes pretty much outlined by Karen before you destroy a really super and intriguing series….
Person of Interest has lost its mojo. Whomever is calling the shots at CBS might wish to rethink their strategy regarding this drama. The decline in ratings is radical and likely irreversible. Apparently the “bait and switch” of storylines has not been well received by watchers, and there is no way to put a positive spin on what has transpired. This is a textbook case of how a successful show can be ruined by considering the egos of the writers more important than the interests of the viewers. Creativity means little if there are not enough people to appreciate it,… Read more »
it has lost what 50% of its season 1/2 audience? this thing is shark bait.
For all I care the amazing race and survive can b canceled. They take to much time and interfere with the good shows. I’m tired of reality shows that don’t give me any reason to c them. I would take them all of air or move them to a channel that ppl who like that sort of programming cam watch. I need my Elementary fix and fast!!
In the first graphic the 60 minutes viewers are wrong. it’s 18.17 million and not 4.61 million
Thanks!
