Code Black just wrapped its third and final season, but is there a chance for more? Recently, creator Michael Seitzman spoke with Deadline about the possible future of the cancelled CBS TV show.
The medical drama unfolds at Angels Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles — the busiest, most notorious ER in the country. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, and Rob Lowe.
In the interview, Seitzman said he’s proud of the how Code Black ended:
One of the things I always wanted to explore in the show is the nature of grief. I wanted to be honest about it, face it head on, and really explore how messy it is, how mysterious it is, and how miraculous it is when we finally see some light. The way we dealt with it for all three seasons, with our patients and our doctors, is something I’m very proud of, especially the way we delved into it with Rob Lowe’s Ethan Willis this season, in looking at his PTSD and the way his mind processed his grief and guilt when it came to his brother.”
However, the CBS series creator revealed he did have plans for a fourth season:
There’s an aspect to Ryan McGarry’s documentary, which inspired the show, which I always found interesting. When the staff was moving from the old LA County Medical Center to the new one. It shook them up in a very particular way. In a way, there were ghosts in that old building that they found they needed and those ghosts didn’t exist in the new building. It affected the way they approached their jobs and their patients and they wondered if they could still be as intimate with them in the new building. I always wanted to do that in Code Black, take our staff out of Angels Memorial and see what would happen if we moved them into a new building. Flying a plane into Angels seemed to make that an easy creative transition.”
And what are the chances of a renewal from another network? Seitzman says they’re all still hopeful:
The studio has reached out to all of the streaming services. To be honest, we haven’t heard back from them yet. We’re hopeful.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Code Black? Would you watch a fourth season?

I was watching the show and when it ended I looked at my husband and said, “Wait? Was that the season finale or the series?“ I hit info and sure enough, it was over. Please, another network needs to pick this up. Netflix??? I’d binge watch every episode and impatiently wait for the next season!!!
Please dont cancel this show this is one of the best shows our family looks forward to it
Code black is such a great show with an outstanding cast. Why was it cancelled??? There are some really stupid shows that just stay around too long. Then there are great shows like Code Black that get cancelled with very little warning. Why??? Hollywood executives are a bunch of idiots!!
Maybe my favorite show on TV. Great in all respects. Hoping someone picks it up
Great show. Please bring it back. Much better than all the reality shows.
I absolutely love this show!!! Please find a way to continue. The actors are great and I cry in every episode. I vote to keep it
One of my favorite shows. Why do the networks always cancel the good shows, but keep those stupid reality shows. Bring Code Black back for a 4th season!!!!
Im furious they cancelled this great sho
Sick and tired of reality show that I’m not real. This was a great show. I’m going to miss it. I’ hope it gets picked up by another network with better sense.
This is one of my favorite shows. I’m shocked that it was canceled. I hope another network picks it up. I would definitely watch it.
I am tired of the current medical dramas that make hospitals “neat”, orderly and “state of the art” facilities that are mere settings for dramas that are not much better than the daytime soap opera story-lines. The chaotic and “critical moment” decision making story lines in the midst of the personal lives of the characters is almost in kind to the better years of ER (though not quite achieving the standard ER set in its early years). Yes, the show could use improvement, but given the expensive hospital settings and schmaltzy “Chicago Med”, “The Good Doctor” and “The Resident” is… Read more »
Very disappointed Code Black is not returning. Well written show and great story line. There are not many shows I watch on TV but Code Black was one I always recorded. Who ever made the decision to cancel the show needs to rethink their decision!
This was a must-watch show in our household and this finale was the best…my husband was in tears…I tried to hold mine back …didn’t need two sobbing fools. What a shame that it’s always the best shows that get cancelled. Every story within the story held you til the end…but leaving you with enough anticipation til the next weeks show. Great cast and great stories you brought us. Could be much more to tell
One of the best shows on television. Please bring other back
If enough of we “Code Black” fanatics express our strong desire for more, maybe another network will pick it up. It worked for “Nashville”! CMT gave us 2 more seasons after ABC dumped it.
YES! I would definitely watch Code Black for another season. Missing it already. The story line has some exciting expansions. Each episode has left me waiting for the following episode. Please bring it back!!!
