The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.
What do you think? Do you think that USA should have cancelled the Colony TV show? Should the series have been renewed for a fourth (and final) season or, is season three a good place to end it?
The Network at least owes the viewers a rap up season. There are so many possibilities and stories left untold. The story was refreshing in that it was not about vampires, zombies but a space invasion.. Its out the door. NETFLIX are you listening.
From now on, I’m not going to watch any shows that are story based until the whole show has concluded. I’ll just watch the re-runs. Sick of this crap.
From what I can tell the show got axed due to poor oversight. Such a great show! Great enough to bring on great actors like Wayne Brady! Watch 3 seasons of this and ask yourself poor show or poor management? My guess is it’s certainly not the show! Why would a show with so much potential so much talent be treated like this? I guess you’ll have to ask the network!
So Disappointed! I like where the story was going. Too bad we don’t get to find out how it ends!
Actually pretty angry to read this. These ways of doing ratings is so sad because so many dont get the option to fill out or wifes do it (the couple we have gotten she just did leaving my opinions out) As with others I’m really tired of not getting closure, especially like this. Networks have an insanely bad habit of cancelling right when things get good. Like now everything has been building to what should be season 4. Even if season 4 was the end of it, they could do an amazing last season This is why so many dont… Read more »
Colony was absolutely fantastic! Dam shame to see an amazing show get axed from a network it didn’t belong on in the first place! Send it to syfy ratings will not dissapoint!
Besides queen of the south this was the best show on usa. I invested 3 years in this show and i cant even get a decent ending. USA should be boycotted!!!
I’m astounded that they canceled the show and worse, left the storyline dangling. Surely other shows have worse records. I watched Colony religiously & was invested in the characters. Is it possible another network will pick it up?
I was very disturbed to realize tonight’s episode was the series finale. I loved it, had some good plots, sci fi but grounded in today’s realities. Great show and I hope a network like SciFi picks it up.
I think every show that gets a second season should have a “resolution clause” in its contract: a double-episode to wrap things up after 2 seasons AND one full episode per season beyond that. If a show has run for 8 years, they get 8 episodes to resolve everything and end the show without leaving the fans hanging. With all the other crap the networks get away with nowadays (“full seasons” of as few as 6 episodes when the standard used to be 26+ – we’re not Great Britain, dammit!, multi-month “hiatus” in the middle of a season, banner advertizing… Read more »
This is why viewership goes down. You have a massive change, like Season 3 losing their contract in the LA area forced to move location to Vancouver BC with a faux Seattle story, change creative forces and you don’t even allow it to reset. Audience hates to invest in series that don’t even have closure that get axed in knee jerk fashion. You could have at least done right by the story, fans, and the creator and made an attempt at a wrap up. Makes me afraid to even continue to invest in other USA shows. Why even attempt scripted… Read more »
Loved this show. Should have renewed.
How stupid to END a series with no real closure. I don’t think I’m going to watch any more USA shows.
It sucks that they end the show without any closure. Now I wasted my time watching the first 3 seasons. Very disappointed!
let’s give Colony a final send-off. We need a good ending to this show if you’re going to cancel it
