The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.
What do you think? Do you think that USA should have cancelled the Colony TV show? Should the series have been renewed for a fourth (and final) season or, is season three a good place to end it?
I liked Colony. To me it got a little off track in Season 2 but came roaring back in Season 3. I think they should have wrapped everything up in a nice neat bow with a 2 hour movie. I don’t like the way the left things on a cliff hanger. I really thought things were improving with the move to Seattle but it just don’t think that USA really supported it or promoted it like it did in Season 1 or 2.
I am very upset that colony was canceled! I just discovered Colony about 6 months ago on Netflix (season 1&2)
I think Colony was in a horrible time slot, because I get up very early for work, many times I had to watch it days after it aired because it was on too late.
Colony and the Walking dead were the only reasons I kept my cable, otherwise I can watch Netflix, Crackle, Tubi,……
It is a real shame that Colony was cancelled by USA Network. We have stayed with the show through very slow story development in my opinion, I feel the Network owes the viewers somme kind of closure. Even though the numbers were not sufficient, in their opinion, to warrant the renewal, what about the people who ARE REGULARLY WATCHING THE SHOW! I would be ok some kind ofspecial to tie up the series. How about how they ended season 2 with them leavinf and picking up 6 months later? How about seeing the Bowmans after the war is over and… Read more »
The plot lines may have been drawn out a little more than most shows, but the story lines were starting to develop. The character’s personal intricacies were exceptional and complicated, just as in real life. I agree with earlier posts, the network hould do the right thing. Give their audience closure, or better yet, bring Colony back!
I am tired of getting all involved in a series just to see them get dropped. Unbelievably disappointed in USA.
If you’re angry just imagine how I feel, this article was the first idication the series is done. I very rarely watch TV but Colony was a refreshing exception. Ill probably avoid watching the final two episodes I have yet to watch. It’ll just break my heart further.
Hopefully another network will pick up Colony. It’s a well acted, thought provoking show.
I am disappointed also. I just got into the series and really enjoy it. I would like to see it conclude like a story should.
USA Network doesn’t love us anymore 🙁 Bring back @ColonyUSA
Agree with all these comments! All the networks want to broadcast are freak shows like Big Brother or endless Bachelor(ette) type of garbage; if I want to watch demented psychos, I can turn on the news. Save quality scripted TV series for those of us that enjoy real story lines, please.
I think that if a company makes and shows a series then it should be in the contract of viewing to the public that they MUST actually bring to a close the storyline in a satisfying conclusion to the viewers who have taken the time to watch and enjoy the series/seasons. So dissatisfying to watch from the beginning and get embroiled in the stories and action then left hanging when the show is cancelled without an ending of these stories. It puts you off watching these series at all.
Couldn’t have said this better myself. They owe it to us, the viewing audience, to bring a series to conclusion, whether it’s a happy or sad ending.
In the last 2 seasons the show really came forward and picked up, this (3) season was the best and I am very disappointed of the decision to cancel this excellent series. Far to premature for this to be finished just when it was really starting to heat up, what a shame
Colony had a poor finale. No closure. Typical Hollywood can’t finish what they started. Another example of how the media influence people to stop half way and never complete their tasks.
Why they cancel the good shows especially in mid story(NBC did same to Revolution), but they keep putting out all this so-called reality(not) TV (because its cheep to produce). They wonder why people are switching to streaming channels.Maybe that rich guy from Amazon might be a fan and help save it like he did the Scifi channel show the Expanse.(Which i like). Don’t understand how dumb shows like Big Brother or what ever its called can still be on after 14 or 20 seasons and other scripted reality shows keep on going and Colony get canned after 3. Its nice to… Read more »
This show started out as a slow burn. Although there was a lot of action in subsequent seasons, the writers were still able to focus on the characters and their development. I really liked it and I wish that USA could at least wrap it up in a 2 hour movie. Leaving a show on a cliff hanger is ABC’s domain. Do the right thing.!
