Deception just wrapped its first and only season, but what would’ve happened next? Recently, EP Chris Fedak told EW his plans for the cancelled ABC TV show.
The crime drama centers on Cameron Black (Jack Cutmore-Scott), an illusionist who uses his tradecraft to help the Feds apprehend some of the most elusive criminals in the world. Ilfenesh Hadera, Lenora Crichlow, Amaury Nolasco, Justin Chon, Laila Robins, and Vinnie Jones also star.
As reported earlier, ABC cancelled Deception after one season. However, EP Chris Fedak told EW there were plans for a second season:
About a month ago, we put together a pitch for season 2, which was epic and a really fun flip on the show that would have had Jonathan out in the world with the Mystery Woman, having adventures there. For me, I don’t think that Cameron would have been trapped in jail for too long. I think that he would have been there for probably 36 hours, enough time for him to seriously get into trouble. He would save himself by trying to do some magic tricks and hiding. With the DNA test or fingerprints, they would realize what had happened. He would be out of jail, but that’s only the beginning of it. The idea that you’ve been betrayed by your brother, the guy you’ve been trying to save, that’s such a delicious [story line] — Cameron going after his brother and trying to figure out what exactly happened. I think that would have been a huge twist on our show.”
And what about Mystery Woman? Would season two have revealed more about her?:
No, here’s the thing about the Mystery Woman: She’s an Ashley. No, Tiffany. I think she’s definitely a Tiffany. [Laughs] For me, one of the things about season 2 was about Johnathan coming to know who she really is, and it’s seeing her as a tragic character, in a way. What is her real name becomes a thing where it’s like, she has lots of names. She doesn’t reveal to anyone what her true name is, and that would have been something that would play out over the course of the season until she finally does, and that would be another emotional connection between the two of them. It’s the secret she keeps close, and we would of course give her a number of different names, and that was a part of the fun of it. I just like calling her Mystery Woman. The moment we were like, “So we have this Mystery Woman, and we’ll give her a name at some point.” I’m like, “Maybe we don’t.””
What do you think? Did you watch Deception? Would you have watched season two?
This show really grew on me. I enjoyed the creativity involved in working magic into the plot, my compliments to the writers. Why are you cancelling my new favorite? Can it really be that expensive to produce? Network TV is dying, and decisions like this are killing it. Can we have some diversity in shows, please? Must they all be soap-opera dramas about cops and firefighters and hospitals? Geez. Wake up, ABC.
I loved this show. I agree with Virginia Zaehring, networks keep a lot of GARBAGE and cancel fledgling shows before characters can really be developed.
yes liked it they cancelling all good shows keeping garbage
I loved Deception! It is – was a great show. Funny and interesting. It was the one new show I looked forward to watching.
Loved the show! It’s unique. Different. I was sad it ended and yes, I would continue to watch! I agree with the producer’s scenario. Cameron would be out soon. But Kay would probably get herself in a world of mischief trying to recapture Jonathan.
ABC, Please do not cancel the show. Think about Cameron Black and the Mystery Woman we gave her a name. I will be crushed if it stays cancelled forever.
Please bring it back – it has been my NEW FAVORITE!!!!
As others have said, Deception was a FUN show. It didn’t take itself too seriously, which is what is needed sometimes. It was also ORIGINAL, unlike the FAKE FAMILY SHOWS that dominate the airwaves. This is just one of the reasons Network TV is failing to satisfy its viewers.
I am so angry! I LOVE DECEPTION!!! my favorite show on t.v. right now. Canceling it was dumb! Not to mention wicked annoying cliffhanger…so depressed that I started loving a show only 4 it to be canceled, while they still have ridiculous shows, like survivor, the bachelor (bachelorette). A bloody shame.
I loved this show. It was something different for once. Instead of killing and bad crime shows that always get renewed. This was s breath of fresh air. So sad to see it go. Bring it back!!!!
I was very disappointed to find out that “Deception” is not coming back for a Season 2. I enjoyed the show, the characters and the twists in the plots. Season 1 laid the groundwork for a great season 2 and I believe ABC has made a serious mistake in letting this one go.
We enjoyed the show and the illusions and plot twists. Sadly, not being renewed but other “trash” seems to make the cut. What a mistake.
Even if I say I Loved the show it was full of adventures and fun ABC won’t be bringing back deception and that’s to bad I saw the schedule 2018 and Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday they have nothing worthy to wach
I would most definitely watch more seasons of Deception. Bring more magic!
Most definitely!! I loved the show! Am really bummed that it’s been cancelled!!
