Tonight marks the end of ABC’s Deception TV show. The alphabet network decided to cancel the Sunday night drama series after just one season of 13 episodes. Why was it cancelled? Would you have watched a second season?
An ABC crime drama from creator Chris Fedak, Deception stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as illusionist Cameron Black, with Ilfenesh Hadera, Lenora Crichlow, Amaury Nolasco, Justin Chon, Laila Robins, and Vinnie Jones. With big shows in Vegas and New York, Cameron is rocketing to the top, when scandal derails his show and his twin’s life. While watching the news, he realizes that the FBI has been deceived by an illusionist, and whoever it was, stole one of his signature moves. Now, this magician is using his tradecraft to help the Feds apprehend some of the most elusive criminals in the world and hopes to prove his brother, Jonathan (Cutmore-Scott), is an innocent man.
Debuting on March 11th, Deception got off to a decent start with 1.20 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.93 million viewers. The show’s premiere ratings were likely helped by the fact that the first episode aired after the ABC debut of American Idol (which drew a much bigger audience).
Week two saw the ratings drop by more than 32% and the numbers kept dwindling downward as the season progressed. Last week’s episode attracted a 0.60 in the demo with 3.18 million.
With ratings like these. it was no surprise that ABC decided not to order a second season. Unfortunately, filming had already been completed before that decision came down so the writers didn’t have time to wrap things up.
Though the show’s ratings were low, Deception clearly has some devoted fans who wanted the show to continue.
What do you think? Did you like the Deception TV show? Would you have watched season two? Do you think that this show could have been a hit or, was it not made for a broad audience?
It was a great show. Entertaining and intriguing. Kept me on the edge of my seat every week. Why would they cancel that and then they keep crappy shows on????
They always cancel the goods shows. I feel bad for the cast because they really worked well together. ABC needs to step up its game and hire writers who can keep this tough crowd entertained.
Networks need to realize they no longer have a captive audience. People have so many choices that numbers aren’t going to stay high for most shows. But, if they keep cancelling great shows like Deception, their viewership is only going to continue to dwindle. I barely ever watch network series now BECAUSE they cancel so many good shows. What’s the point of getting hooked on a show when chances are it will be cancelled early.

I would’ve watched Season 2 of Deception. They left us with such a cliff hanger too. Would’ve loved to have see if Cameron woukd’ve gotten out of jail and if he would have forgiven Johnny. I realky hope that another network or even Netflix picks up the series . I’m praying and hoping.
I wish they were keeping also but would personally be disappointed if they went to one of those subscription programs only online
What a bunch of crap, one of the best new shows this past season and I missed the first few episodes. Yes, a different night would have been much better. Hope someone has the sense to pick it up.
Figures. Only good shows get cancelled.
Can’t believe it. I’m feeling so disappointed honestly. It was such a great show, it was funny, it had a little bit of action into it, and the mystery ! It always left a good taste afterwards. Well, that is except the ending, the ending looks so awful right now that we don’t see how things would have worked out. Loved the twin brothers idea, they were so different from one another but yet you could always see their deep connection. And there was a little romance blossoming too. I’m feeling really angry about it too, cause it was too… Read more »
I have been enjoying Deception more and more with each episode! They have a lot to work with (his helpers, current situation, etc.) re future plots and it keeps getting more fascinating–YES, I WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY WATCHED ANOTHER SEASON OF DECEPTION!!!!!!! Annie
Hello – from the UK.
Thoroughly enjoyable show which in american tradition gets pulled without having the chance to develop either the story or characters further .
Disappointed.
I think if the show aired on a different day of the week, it might have had a chance (just my opinion). I loved the show! The finale was bittersweet. It’s a great season finale but a crappy series finale! Can someone pitch the next season to a different channel or Netflix/Hulu/Amazon?
Lordy, please don’t do that. Not everyone subscribing to those.
I did say another channel too. I know some people might not get any of those. I know lots of shows that don’t get picked up from other networks sometimes go to those such as Netflix. Could be worse and go to a cable channel that people don’t get either. I’m hoping for DVD release myself.
I’d love season two also but disappointed if only on online subscription only.
Very disappointed! The only ABC show I watch. Would definitely watch a season 2!
I absolutely would’ve watched more of this show! It was really good and a rare find. I’m still hoping it won’t be cancelled after all!
No please please don’t cancel. Finally something I eagerly wait for the next episode. Please reconsider
I would definitely watched another season. It was one of the few network shows I enjoyed.
