On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

I hope this is brought back. I really think the writing is good.
Excellent show. If this series is canceled ABC should fire their programming guru!!
My ABSOLUTE favorite new show!! I love it!! Possibly more promotion or
FOR PETE’S SAKE give it a chance! It’s realistic, every single character is
interesting. I call my friends to remind them to watch.
Keep it ABC!!
I’m anxiously awaiting for Detroit 187 to return. I love the show and the actors – plus
the fact that it is in Detroit. Please return soon.
One of my favorites….ABC should give it some time and do some promotion. They haven’t supported this show very much and I believe if people watch they’ll be hooked just like my wife and I.
Keep it ABC!!
I happened upon an ad on TV re: locating info on one of my favorite shows – Detroit 187 only to find out cancellation is being considered. A bad decision by the powers that be. It is one of my favorite new shows this season – in a season where the pickings are slim. It airs during a time slot of 2 of my other favorites – and I always record it whenever I am unable to see it live. Please reconsider -possibly change its time slot or day of the week. The acting, story lines and character developments are… Read more »
This has become my favorite show. Thought I found one now that cold case and numbers git cancelled. Is there anywhere to write to help save it?
This is an amazing cop show and deserves to stay on for another season. Perhaps it just needs a different time slot in order to get better ratings.
Why is it that often good shows don’t last and bad ones won’t go away? Can anyone give explain why Desperate Housewives still attracts viewers? Maybe the public only wants to see train wrecks like the popular reality series. This is a show with good story lines and excellent actors. I would have placed odds on this show’s survival. Sometimes it takes longer to draw an audience. I hope ABC will hang in there.
I think the Detroit 187 stinks. Not very exciting, predictable, and overall kinda boring.
Southland – Now that is a great cop show.
I love this show, in fact its one of the only new shows I look forward to watching each week . I don’t think the networks give these shows a chance..I’m sick of news shows, reality shows, game shows…Really! I watch mostly cable..better content.
I too, loved “Life on Mars”
It is an excellent show. Perhaps to gain more viewers the writers could make the show more like a documentary like cops. I am getting disgusted that every adult cop show that has a sophisticated plot like “Life on Mars” or “Flashforward” gets canceled.
Detroit 1-8-7 is good show that deserves a longer run. ABC should move it to an earlier time slot and that would likely help draw a larger audience.
I love Detroit 187! The storylines, the characters, keeps you on the edge of your seat. I will be very sad if they cancel this show. Like ‘Off the Map’ is a better show??? It’s NYPD Blue all over again….it even has Lt from NYPD Blue. I can’t believe that Glee is a higher rated show than 187. What a damn shame.
One of the better made cop shows in years. Reminds me of the old Hill Street Blues. It would be a shame to see it end. The only reason I can see for the low ratings is the lack of sex and gay relationships. It seems you can’t find a show these days with consistantly good story lines and better than “B” acting. 1-8-7 has both. I wonder if it’s because of all of the non-caucasian characters in the show. It was one of the things that made me watch the series. There are not enough decent TV series’ with… Read more »
