On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

Love this show!!!! ABC…has got to be a bunch of idiots if they cancel this show. Give it a chance…..so far there are many many people watching…and word of mouth carries alot of weight! Intense action and great subject lines!!!!! Love it ….Love Fitch….Love IT…..Keep it !!!!
Loved the show…Michigander watching it from Florida…I can’t believe it has been cancelled without giving it a chance- typical. Reality TV has taken over and creativity is left by the wayside.
Too bad, ABC. We really enjoyed watching this show. It was well done and had a touch of the homey yet big city to it. We enjoyed the characters and the plot lines.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show! Fantastic actors, believable story-lines, and I can honestly say I feel for the city of Detroit because of this show. The city is beautiful and with so much history, but has been the victim of so much bad press no longer deserved. Please keep this show on the air! It is by far our favorite in this house.
Please do not cancel this show. I enjoy Detroit 187. It takes time for these shows to develop the characters and have a following. Don’t believe the ratings give it a better time slot and a chance to suceed.
This is my favorite show!! Please don’t cancel it!!
If it takes a groundswell of email support for this terrific show Detroit 187, consider this our vote..Put it back on. You’ve left us involved with interesting characters whose relationships are evolving. It doesn’t feel good to not be able to follow these plausible plots and the subtle nuances the writer has given us.
LOVE this series! Wonderful story lines, actors. Please keep it….DON’T CANCEL!!!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE KEEP IT, I SO LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING SOMETHING TO WATCH DURING THE WEEK, AND DETROIT 187 IS IT. PLEASE KEEP IT GOING !!!!!!!!
Please keep the show. It’s the best there is.
Finally, an intelligent show on ABC and they want to cancel it? Great job, ABC!!!! Hope someone comes to their senses and renews for another season.
KEEP THIS SHOW ON!!!Such a great show and great cast. I like the personalities of each character. I just wish it was on even an hour earlier.
I think Poor Richard is right. CBS might do a better job with this show. If the show isn’t formulaic, ABC would prefer not to get too close. It might tarnish its reputation for airing shows that correspond to the phony sound of its promotional announcer’s voice. He’s good at promoting shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, shows I got sick of after one season. The ABC idea of success is to find shows that ask us to be astonished, but not necessarily feel anything. The producers of Detroit 187 should be applauded for doing more than usual on… Read more »
Favorite show of the season. Good stories, fine acting, and excellent soundtracks. Would be disheartened to the show canceled. Just maybe ABC execs are the problem? I bet CBS could make the show work!
The initials abc seem to stand for “already been cancelled.” What a shame! This is an excellent, intelligent, well-acted show. I guess that is why it won’t survive.
This is my family’s favorite TV show. Love the characters, stories and the productions. Great show. Please keep it.
