The Family stars Joan Allen stars as Claire Warren, Alison Pill as Willa Warren, Rupert Graves as John Warren, and Zach Gilford as Danny Warren. Margot Bingham is Detective Nina Meyer. Liam James is Ben/Adam Warren. Andrew McCarthy is Hank Asher. Floriana Lima is Bridey Cruz. Young Willa and Danny are played by Madeleine Arthur and Rarmian Newton.

Claire finally realizes what Adam and Ben endured when she visits the hell hole-like tomb where they were kept, exploding with grief, anger and frustration. Meanwhile Jane looks to make a getaway as Nina closes in on Doug’s location, and Agent Clements’ time is running out. Hank comes face to face with his inner demons, and one phone call shatters Ben’s world, forcing him to tackle an uncertain destiny.

The Family was canceled due to low ratings. As of the May 8th episode, the series averaged 0.83 in the 18-49 year-old viewer demographic and drew an average total audience of 3.276 million viewers. We have been tracking 25 scripted ABC series during the 2015-16 television season. Those numbers leave The Family ranked 21st out of 25, when sorted by both the demo and total average audience.

ABC cancelled The Family on Thursday, May 12, 2016, so this first season finale was not written as an intentional TV series finale. If the audience will get sufficient closure or satisfaction from “What Took So Long,” remains to be seen.

This show was one of the very few TV shows I took time to watch. I’m utterly disappointed in the cancellation. The season finally left open doors. I really hope the network reconsiders cancelling. The major competing show is now over. The network should give The Family a chance.

Bad choice ABC AND NBC. The family, Nashville, and the game of silence were awesome shows. I can’t believe you cancelled all 3 of my favorite shows. Hope Netflix picks them up.. with some of the crap shows like The Batchelor and Batchelorette and The Mistress’s, you cancel good story line shows. I’m very disappointed.
Bring back THE FAMILY! My family and I are hooked. I know you’ll pick up more berries if you keep airing.
I was extremely hooked on this show since the first episode. I very disappointed the series was cancelled! So not fair to leave the viewers with a cliff hanger!! Please please renew for season 2!
Bad choice cancelling The Family. Reconsider and cancel one of the crappy reality shows instead
My wife and I are highly disappointed that ABC canceled this show. This is the second time ABC has canceled a show that we liked and will not be burned again. I hope another network picks it up because it is captivating drama that we looked forward to. The acting was very good as well.

What is WRONG with ABC? They are cancelling 2 of the BEST shows on TV— Nashville and The Family! What was to have been the season finale of The Family was one of the most intriguing cliff hangers, ever! I can’t believe they are not bringing it back for another season! I would really like to know just what populations are being sampled for ratings and what the criteria is for determining the value of good, prime time entertainment. I agree with you 100%. Tonight’s episode was one of the most gripping and intriguing cliffhangers I have EVER seen on TV. I was so anxious and excited to see how all the plot twists play out next season, only to learn that this was the last episode of the series. I am in shock, totally disbelieving the terrible decision to cancel this show. As the network executives know, so many of the most successful programs in television history had a shaky first season and then blossomed into a huge juggernaut, SEINFELD being one example. I think the family was one the best tv drama on tv..the season finale was superb to cancel it would be a huge mistake.. please please bring it back!!
They definitely need to have closure, Adam be found alive the bad guy dead, and the end of the show…Then life goes on.
My husband and I love The Family and I couldn’t believe it when he told me it had been cancelled and tonight was the finale. It leaves everybody hanging and I feel that we should get closure on their story.
