Liam James is Ben/Adam Warren. Andrew McCarthy is Hank Asher. Floriana Lima is Bridey Cruz. Young Willa and Danny are played by Madeleine Arthur and Rarmian Newton.

Claire finally realizes what Adam and Ben endured when she visits the hell hole-like tomb where they were kept, exploding with grief, anger and frustration. Meanwhile Jane looks to make a getaway as Nina closes in on Doug’s location, and Agent Clements’ time is running out. Hank comes face to face with his inner demons, and one phone call shatters Ben’s world, forcing him to tackle an uncertain destiny.

Jenna Bans wrote the story for The Family TV series finale, “What Took So Long.” The teleplay is by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain. The episode was directed by Paul McGuigan.

The Family was canceled due to low ratings. As of the May 8th episode, the series averaged 0.83 in the 18-49 year-old viewer demographic and drew an average total audience of 3.276 million viewers. We have been tracking 25 scripted ABC series during the 2015-16 television season. Those numbers leave The Family ranked 21st out of 25, when sorted by both the demo and total average audience.

ABC cancelled The Family on Thursday, May 12, 2016, so this first season finale was not written as an intentional TV series finale. If the audience will get sufficient closure or satisfaction from “What Took So Long,” remains to be seen.

I was very disappointed to hear this show wouldn’t be renewed for a second season, especially after watching the plot twisting season finale! So many questions were left unanswered and it seemed to be set up perfectly to make another great season. Like what some of you said, I hope they are able to do something like a half season maybe. Please bring this show back!
How could you do this ABC? The Family was so well done and well written. I was just saying during tonight’s episode Andrew McCarthy should.get an Emmy nom for his creepy character. I’m so disappointed in ABC now and feel jaded about getting wrapped up in a series just to have it ripped away, and with a huge cliffhanger. Please, another network should pick this up
Very very disappointed with ABC!! Was really looking forward too the next season. My fiancé and I LOVE this show watched it faithfully every Sunday and recorded it if we couldn’t be home. I told my sister about it 2 weeks ago and she went home and watched the 10 episodes in 2 days she was hooked and Loves it also. I don’t usually watch anything on ABC and I guess I will go back to not watching anything on ABC seeing as The Family won’t be back on….so disappointed!!
UNBELIEVABLE! This was a really good show. I think you owe it to the fans of the show to at least finish up the show tie up all the lose ends before you slash and burn. You left people hanging that was just mean spirited. Never will watch any ABC series again. Too much Shonda.
Please reconsider! Many shows take seasons to get a following, so this one isn’t getting much of a chance. I love the show and have turned several people onto it as of recent. I’m so disappointed it’s being canceled.
I believe that the first season may have been slow however it was good its like a book that starts off with too much detail to small stuff. That being said I read the outline to season two an it sounded worth the effort however I do believe a change of time slot would also help because of so many shows that are running at the same time.
It was awful rid show was cancelled. It was riveting and well written. The best I’ve seen in a while.
I really enjoy The Family and am surprised and disappointed that it has been cancelled. WHAT!,?. The story is full of twists and turns, the characters are interesting and not run of the mill and I want to know what will happen next. I’m even interested in the pedophile and find myself thinking differently, somewhat sympathetically about him and his dilemma about desire vs action. An intelligent program that should continue. Bring it back…give us more!
So dumb to cancel that ending didn’t give anyone closure
1st Nashville now the Family, the two best shows in my opinion this station had!! Maybe if they would just run out a series to the end, viewers would be more inclined to watch it and I bet that would help their ratings. I don’t know about those reading this, but I will never watch any new series this station airs because clearly the chances of it getting canceled are about 90% based on their history. No wonder why the ratings suck.
The finally made me sit on the edge of my seat with several others who would watch it regularly. They should at least do the decency to have another hour or 2 episode closing it out. Too many cliff hangers. Makes me not want to ever start a new show.
So disappointed ! This so was great! I hope another network picks it up. Do not know how I am ever going to be able to watch another ABC show. They cancel all the good ones, why bother with ABC anymore
Very disappointed this intriguing show was cancelled. It was well-written, acted and suspenseful. Seems every time I find a show that requires thinking, the networks cancel it.
I’m utterly shocked to find out my favorite Sunday show has been cancelled. Seriously ABC??? This is very disappointing.
What is the matter with abc!!!?? I love this show and now you leave us hanging and then cancel the show!! I’m so sick and tired of good shows not given the chance to develop! If you have to cancel at least finish the story!! I’m going to think twice before I invest my time in watching anymore new shows on abc!
