After two seasons on the air, CBS has pulled the plug on their Wednesday night sitcom, Gary Unmarried. The TV show won’t be back in the fall for season three.
Gary Unmarried revolves around a newly-divorced house-painter and dad, Gary Brooks (Jay Mohr), who’s readjusting to the single life. Others in the cast include Paula Marshall, Ryan Malgarini, Kathryn Newton, Keegan-Michael Key, and Brooke D’Orsay.
The sitcom debuted in September of 2008 to a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.84 million viewers. The first season’s 20 episodes ended up averaging a 2.2 in the demo and 7.06 million viewers.
Those numbers put Gary Unmarried on the bubble for renewal. It ultimately escaped cancellation, likely because CBS co-produces the sitcom and decided to keep trying to make the Wednesday night comedy block work.
This season, the show’s ratings didn’t improve, averaging a 2.2 in the demo and 6.8 million viewers.
That wasn’t good enough to earn a renewal this time around and CBS has cancelled the series after 37 episodes. The network has also canned The New Adventures of Old Christine and Accidentally on Purpose.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Gary Unmarried’s been cancelled, that there won’t be a third season?

Gary Unmarried was a great show! Jay Mohr and the entire cast were hilarious. However, if the 1st Seasons didn’t go too well, I didn’t see this one picking any new viewers up. I’m sad to see it go. I think it had a good viewer base and people would have started picking up on it.
Gary Unmarried and Rules of Engagement are shows that make CBS!!! I cannot believe they got rid of Gary and left us all hanging, while Gary is still married to and still loves Allison!!! WHAT??? How can they do that? I hate when good shows get cancelled; I think networks should be required to end series with like a 2 hour movie so at least we have closure!!!
This was the only reason I turned the Tv on Wednesday nights, along with The New Adventures of Old Christine!
This just proves that CBS and all the networks don’t care about the viewers! Gary Unmarried was one of our favorite shows…guess it is time to turn full time to ESPN.
Gary Unmarried was becoming my favorite sitcom. The actors were great, believable, and I enjoyed the story line. CBS owes us closure for the cliffhanger! I would like to see them bring it back. Well, I’ve been watching more CNBC!
They better bring it back . I would watch it ever week . There just going to replace it with some crap that gets bad ratings . Idiots . If they kept these great shows on long enough to hit sydication people would look for new episodes and rating would be good . I never saw one criminal minds till it was on a&e now I watch it all the time .
Bad decision on cbs’ part. Another network needs to look at both of these shows. These were two of the top three sitcoms I enjoy on cbs. I know it’s mindless comedy but sometimes that is exactly what you need after having a bad day. This stinks!
Don’t even get me started with cbs cancelling ATWT, my favorite soap.
I loved, loved, loved Gary Unmarried the first season. Then the second season came and this show went from funny to God awful! Gary went from charming and lovable to annoying and beyond stupid. 3 Biggest mistakes the show made: Getting rid of… Ed Begley, Jr. as Dr. Walter Krandall: Ed was brilliant and added so much to the show. Jaime King as Vanessa Flood. Jamie was HOT, funny and charming. Did I mention HOT? Al Madrigal as Dennis Lopez. Al cracked me up as the loser best friend. Perfect sidekick to Gary. The only good things left from season… Read more »
This show was funny if you took it for what it is, mindless comedy. I really enjoyed it and hoped to see another season.
The cast was great, and aside from the constant homo references between Gary and his friend, it was pretty well written – again, for what it was. A mindless comedy.
I am so very sad to see this show get cancelled. I really enjoyed this show. My husband and I laughed all the way through this show. It was as funny as two and half men. Please re-think this and keep it going for another year
cbs is so foolish for cancelling the two best shows it has ! Gary Unmarried and The New Adventures of Old Christine were the best two comedies ever ! Awesome casting had my daughter and I laughing from the first minute to the last …..If they were smart they would reconsider . I hope another network is smart enough to pick them both up!
i am very sad to see this go. I thought the show was extremely funny and worth watching. I hope they reconsider!
thanks for nothing once again cbs. gary unmarried was one of the funniest shows on tv.
Old Christine and Gary Unmarried were the 2 shows that made turning on the tv Wednesday nights worth it. I’m so tired of reality shows and crime shows. It was so nice to laugh at, and with, the charaters of “Christine” and “Gary”, two of the funniest shows on at night. CBS has once again disappointed me by cancelling favorites because of the almighty dollar. We all know that cancellations are driven by the ad time purchased during the time slot. They did the same thing to Guiding Light and As the World Turns, two classics that had loyal followings.… Read more »
I’m sad to see this go Jay Mohr was awesome in it he is really a funny guy and great actor and the rest of the cast was good too Paula Marshal and Brooke D’Orsay were great in it. I think it was actually getting better since season 2 loved his new job it gave it more scope for stories and i’m gutted it ended on a cliffhanger why does that always happen and you are left wondering.
I hope Jay Mohr goes onto do something else on tv I will miss him in Gary unmarried. Sad…
