The Grinder rests his case for good. TVLine reports FOX has cancelled the sitcom after one season.
The freshman comedy starred Rob Lowe as a TV lawyer who moves back to his hometown to practice law for real with his attorney brother (Fred Savage). William Devane, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Natalie Morales also starred.
Though the premiere performed well in the ratings, numbers dropped over the course of season one, with the show receiving an average of .75 in the 18-49 demo and a total of 2.176 million viewers.
Rob Lowe confirmed the cancellation on his Twitter today:
#TheGrinder was not renewed by @FOXTV It was unapologetically original, smart, funny and had a murder's row of talent. #GrinderRests.

What do you think? Did you watch The Grinder? Do you think it should’ve been renewed?
Love the show. Very funny and different. Characters are interesting and the combination of dean and Stuart is perfect!
Fools. Absolute fools. The Grinder was the most original sitcom to come around in years. Consistently funny with extremely likable characters, it also dared to be cerebral in nature. I am extremely disappointed in FOX’s lack of forward thinking on this one. Oh, well…let’s put on another show that appeals to morons. It will be on the air for years.
The Grinder was a fabulous show – one of the few that my whole family enjoyed. Would love to see it continue!!
The Grinder is a GREAT show with a star power cast – all the people I’ve enjoyed on other shows together! I’m very hopeful that Netflix or another independent group picks up The Grinder. Truly an over-the-top, Smart, Funny show. Honestly, the cancelling of The Grinder is why I don’t watch first-runs very often, I’d rather catch up on a show during it’s second season (on Hulu, Netflix, etc). This was I know the studio at least gave the show a chance. FOX – isn’t it about money AND the viewer? I guess not.
The Grinder always had me laughing at the great acting & funny funny scripts. I do not understand why this wasn’t renewed. Maybe if we renamed it ‘Housewives of….’ Network TV executives you disappoint me yet again.
We need smart, funny shows like this on TV. It was original and made me laugh out loud – something I haven’t done in years while watching a TV show. Please reconsider!!!! It was the only comedy show that I looked forward to each week. It is fresh, new, unpredictable and the chemistry between the actors/characters was fabulous. Please don’ cancel this show until you give it the promotion, day and time slot that it deserves!
This was only of the best shows (no reality tv BS) on Network TV a funny, smart humor ,well scripted show …Please reconsider.Fox needs to promo the show and gain viewer awareness..A Sienfeld scenario …..
The canceling of, “The Grinder,” proves there is no hope for true talent and comedic genius in Prime Time!
The fact this show was canceled signals the end of hope for talent and comedy in prime time!
Please… reconsider. Can we please (!!!!!), for once, have an intelligent comedy?! And all of the actors and the kids… wow, were perfect!!! Wonderful acting!! Fun, fun, fun!!
This is the only show I truly looked forward to every week. It was laugh out loud funny, well acted and well written. I hope FOX reconsiders and does a better job promoting it!
Nooooo!!! Finally a refreshing comedy with a clever premise and perfect casting all the way down to the youngest cast member! Please reconside!!! Please!
I just read Tom’s comments and I couldn’t agree more. I was thinking the same about the “dumbing down of America” and how Seinfeld would never have made it on this network. Great thoughts, Tom. You are so right in every way.
The Grinder was THE best show on TV. Burst out loud comedy. I don’t get why the decline in viewership.
My husband and I do not watch any new television shows except for “The Grinder”, It is one of the few exceptional shows available to watch. We cannot believe that it was cancelled. What a mistake FOX network is making – we ditto the comments made by other viewers. It was truly an intelligent, witty show. I especially agree with the comments made by Mary – we also watched it “on demand” as we weren’t always available to see it during its regular time slot. This is indeed a loss.
