It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

What a great disappointment.. I really enjoyed this show. I watched it every Tuesday religiously unlike any other damned showout. Skipped a date for it.. Well. Not skipped a date, I didn’t want none of that girl.. But! Beside the point. Watching that show couldn’t be happier. Had convincing/fitting Holt McCallany, and the pesty wife Catherine McCormack for a b-e-a-utiful drama that drew you deep into the story. Almost as much into it as a monkey that just learned to mastab8t. God, what a disappointment FX. Ima put it simply. **** you FX, Justified didn’t need to be promoted that… Read more »
Great show, a breath of fresh air. I’m 56 and I have children in their 30’s and 20’s and they love it. I feel it’s the poor promotion. My kids had never heard of it. Thank goodness for my DVR, they would have missed out. For all of the junk on TV, cutting this show is upsetting. Power to the morons.
I can’t believe they cxled this show already. It just started gettin interesting and it has a few good actors. Wow not even a 2nd chance. Breaking Bad on Fx is pretty dam good as well.
To bad what a great show..maybe another network like HBO will pick it up it would do much better un-edited. FX ship is sinking fast,First Lights out gone and I hear that its always sunny season 7 will be its last so they have 2 and a half men re-runs and Archer WOW good line up
very good show, damn shame it got canned. Each episode has been better and better. Just a shame that it gets canceled when horseshit “reality” shows go on forever.
I think that sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here we go again. A so-so or even really bad show gets cancelled, and a number of posters start whining that it “was the best show ever” and “deserves a second chance” etc. I didn’t think the show was awful, but it was boring, predictable, and poorly cast.
Every show that makes it to the air is NOT a hit. Whether you’re into drama, comedies, period pieces, etc. they all have one major job to do- ENTERTAIN. Lights Out didnt do that.
At first I didnt agree with your post but then realized youre right. It wasn’t a poor show but wasnt very good adn wont be missed
I’m surprised at FX – they usually have such hits with shows like this, and they usually give them a chance. This has been my favorite new show of the year, and I cannot believe it’s going, going, gone. But hey, what else can you expect from networks who want the immediate dollar, instant gratification, and can’t wait for the dollar that they’ll make tomorrow? It’s disenheartening. I hope Holt McCallany finds a different show to pop up on, because HE’S FABULOUS. Perfect match for this show, but I saw him on Jimmy Fallon and he’s a FUNNY GUY! He’s… Read more »
I was sorry to hear about this! My fiancee and I watch it every week. It reminded me of “The Sopranos” . I hope USA picks it up.
I feel bad because I love this show but I didnt catch on until a couple of weeks ago. My buddies and I have caught up through Amazon and Hulu and I wish we would have helped the ratings even more. What a fantastic show and it’s awful that we won’t get to see more of it. FX stopped promoting the show after its premiere and I almost forgot about it. FX dropped the ball completely and I hope somehow they decide to keep it going.
I LOVED THIS SHOW !! IT WAS GREAT AND ENTERTAINING…WELL ACTED AND KEPT YOU WANTING MORE.i COULDN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT WEEKS ESPISODE ..FX IS LOSING OUT BIG TIME..BUT THEN AGAIN WHEN DO TV PEOPLE CARE WHAT OTHER’S LIKE TO WATCH. ARCHER SUCKS!!!!! YOU HAVE TO PAY ME TO WATCH THAT STUPID SHOW IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lights Out is one of the best shows in years! Definitely up there with Damages, Kings, and Rubicon. FX did a horrible job of promoting Lights Out. I’m not surprised at the cancellation.
Lights out was a great show! Thought FX was coming out with another great one like Sons of Anarchy
I enjoyed the show as the network did a poor job of promoting the show. It was different and interesting and I will be sorry to see it go.
Everything I wanted to say has already been posted… I really enjoyed this show, what a bad call on FX’s part.
