Lone Star: FOX TV Show Cancelled After Two Episodes

by Trevor Kimball, September 28, 2010

Lone StarWe all saw it coming. One of the most anticipated TV shows of the new fall season, Lone Star, has been cancelled after two episodes.

Lone Star centers around a handsome conman (James Wolk) who lives a double life to swindle investors and an oil tycoon family. He starts to have regrets and struggles to balance both lives and keep everybody happy. Others in the series are Jon Voight, Adrianne Palicki, Bryce Johnson, David Keith, Eloise Mumford, and Mark Deklin.

The FOX series debuted last week to a very disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.1 million total viewers. Last night, despite several days of buzz and campaigning to get new viewers, the ratings fell even lower to a 1.0 rating in the demo and 3.23 million viewers. As was the case in week one, many people who started watching tuned out before the episode was over. For whatever reason, it just didn’t click.

Lone Star has been cancelled effective immediately and the three remaining unaired episodes have been shelved. There’s no word if FOX will get around to releasing the remaining episodes at some point in the future.

Last week, the cast and crew were shooting the sixth installment. Production has now been shut down and it’s unclear if that episode was completed.

Lone Star’s spot will be filled by the season three premiere of Lie to Me.

What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lone Star be cancelled? If you watched, where do you think it went wrong?

UPDATE: Subsequent reports have indicated that there are six completed episodes with four left unaired.

My husband and I both liked the first 2 episodes; even got other family members to tune in for 2nd show, only now to have it cancelled:( It was a show I was still unsure of, couldn’t really figure out how they would keep the story line going long term, but was willing to hang in there and find out. Not sure why you would cancel after 2 episodes….at least give people time to tell others and see if word of mouth would help out the ratings.

Notice how almost every poster here lamenting the cancellation of Lone Star is of the female persuasion? I write this as a straight male. The only attraction of the show was its star James Wolk who is a dropdead gorgeous hunk with too many shirtless scenes (and not enough acting skills) to make gay guys and ladies drool, and the ladies’ husbands jealous. The story line lacked real substance and was a tangle of improbabilities. It was like a script in search of a plot. Its only redeeming feature was a good-looking amateur actor with a great body. Worse, the… Read more »

I just returned from a week’s vacation, & the first show I wanted to watch on my DVR was Lonestar. I was so disappointed to find out it had not recorded & then REALLY DISAPPOINTED when I checked online to find out it had been cancelled! What a wonderfully acted, entertaining & original show it was! Are the networks just going to keep turning out cookie cutter crime shows & Dancing With the Stars? Thank goodness we still have Mad Men and The Good Wife for some intriguing drama.

That’s such a shame. I really liked this show! My fiance and I were very drawn into it and found it incredibly interesting. Hopefully they will air the other episodes at some point.

Whoa. I didn’t see that coming. I’m very disappointed. This is the reason why I don’t really watch scripted shows. The minute I get into it, they cancel. They could have at least moved it to a different time slot or something rather than kill it so quickly! Geez. *kicks dirt*

I really enjoyed the show and I am sad to see it go. I must admit that I was one of the original nay-sayers, but a co-worker coxed me into watching the pilot and I was hooked. I really hope the network reconsiders and brings it back

Producers always do this – I loved the show and the viewer was just getting to know the players, anything could have happened. Put it in another time slot, everyone can’t be in the #1 spot. Have a little faith in yourself and us and let us see the rest or put the whole show on dvd and we will buy it to see what happens. I enjoyed the different take on this show. Viewers get sick of the same cops and robbers stuff. Be better than the fools who pulled “CANE” that was a great and different show, still… Read more »

It just seems if a show is good —- good chance it will be gone. Demographics, demographics. Certainly beats reality TV where there is no reality. Fox had a good thing and let it go.

I’m going to midland to find James Wolk and bring him back to finish the show. My wife and I both enjoyed this show and are disappointed that it was canceled so quickly. Perhaps if James Wolk were on Oceanic Flight 815 this show would still be on.

Finally not another cop and robber, shoot him up showand yet it ws cancelled. It wasn’t advertised enough. I came across it channel surfing and was hooked by the unique concept. If you show the remaining episodes, maybe others could get a chance to view it.

bah. lame. my mom and i both liked it. it wasn’t a perfect show, coulda done a bit better, but they should’ve given it more than two episodes. the premise was interesting, and what’s more, it was different. i’m sooooooo tired of cop dramas. NCIS, criminal minds, b lh blah blah, CSIs, law and order, i like em but damn there’s enough of em already. and i hate reality tv also. it’s ruining television.

My wife and I absolutely fell in love with the show and are heartbroken that it was cancelled. I didn’t see ANYTHING wrong with it. Although, we WERE confused on one detail. In relation to the con of the oil company giant, John Wolk’s father was supposed to be playing the important part of some type of big consultant with the whole windmill thing. Then, WHY THE HECK put him at a small desk and NOTHING TO DO ALL DAY?? Couldn’t he have like made fake phone calls or do fake paperwork or something? Sitting there IDLE makes him LOOK… Read more »
