Though politics are an extra touchy subject these days, CBS decided to order a new drama about a blonde, female Secretary of State — Madam Secretary. Some feel that it’s a thinly-veiled allusion to Hillary Clinton while others see the show as a piece of fiction. Either way, CBS is a corporation that makes money from selling advertising and must attract healthy ratings to do that. Is Madam Secretary a success with viewers? Will it survive? Cancel or keep it?
On Madam Secretary, former CIA analyst Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) returns to public life after being recruited by the President (Keith Carradine) to become the new Secretary of State. The rest of the cast includes Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Geoffrey Arend, Patina Miller, Erich Bergen, Tim Daly, Katherine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The series debuted on September 21st to a mediocre 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 14.75 million viewers. Last week, Madam Secretary dropped 30% in the demo to a 1.4 rating and dropped 14% in viewership, to 12.72 million. Those aren’t very encouraging numbers for a new series and CBS was surely expecting a lot better.
Low-rated, The Good Wife brings the network some prestige but CBS needs more shows with better numbers.
If Madam Secretary’s ratings stay at this level or continue to decline (particulalry in the demo), this new show will be in very real danger of being cancelled. On the positive side, the network is likely to be patient — at least for awhile. The ratings could go up, especially if the show starts getting some positive word of mouth.
But, what do you think? Do you like Madam Secretary? Will you keep watching? Do you think it should be cancelled? Do you think that it should/will end up being renewed for a second season?
I have noticed that those who don’t like TV dramas tend to be more of a sitcom watcher. Madam Secretary is a wonderful show with a wonderful cast. It’s believable and masterfully entertaining. KEEP IT ON THE AIR.
Love the show…time slot is tricky (following football) which screws up the DVR taping when one is not home to watch it. Not a big TV watcher but this is one I make a point of watching or taping. Like other people have said give it a chance to find an audience, Some of the iconic TV series started out to look like dismal failures.
Was so disappointed in last night’s episode – I loved the first two episodes and recommended to many friends and family. Hopefully, I can remember those people and rescind my recommendation.
Why do you have to force liberal political viewpoints on your tv show…?
Taking this show off my “record series” program on my tv.
Madam Sec. Is one of the best shows on TV. I just wish that there was a women in politic like her and would take an approach like that. This country would be better off. I would vote for her she has all the right ideas. To bad its just a show but a dam good one. Writers keep bringing them on and buy all means make sure she’s stay’s. Right women for the part. This show keeps me wanting more of it.
Madam secretary is an amazing show. Tea lioeni is great for this part. Everyone has no clue what the government deals with on a daily basis and this shows a glimpse. She is not Hilary Clinton cause she couldn’t do the job that the shows the ability of she does. I haven’t seen it. Yes I’m a liberal but don’t Hilary has done the job. This show brings the attention to the job and how important it is to the government. This show needs to remain cause it’s so amazing
I love Madam Secretary and have told many about it. The show is interesting, well scripted and acted. One thing that is difficult is the Sunday evening time slot. I can often find myself watching the episodes after they have aired. Give people a chance to appreciate this show.
I usually have to go to sleep by 8 for work the next day. I stay up just to see this one. And I hardly watch any TV at all. This program was a must see according to the city paper’s entertainment section reviewer. I have not missed a minute of all episodes. BTW, I am a male and don’t want Hillary for pres. Tea Leon produces this one and it is a keeper…but maybe not for American sleezebags who want shallow, sarcastic cheap comedy sit coms, violence and sex. This is a dialogue show and most Americans now have ADD… Read more »
We are loving Madam Secretary! !
Very well written and so VERY entertaining! !
Tea is the perfect woman to play this role!!
Are people watching the same show that I did! Seems like a campaign from the powers at be to keep this very lack luster show on the air thru 2016. Boring and no real character devolpment. Good ridens when it goes!
Please KEEP Madame Secretary on the air. Love this show!!! Good shows are hard to come by today and this one is EXCELLENT.
Horrible show
Your shows have only been on 5weeks and 2 the shows where late starting and one week 2didn’t show take a chill pill give them a chance
I agree with Mary Ann, give the show time to find it’s audience. This is one of the few well-written shows even on TV today. Too many idiots are watching all the vapid crap that passes as entertainment today.
Couldn’t agree with you more! I hope the network pays attention to us!
Snooze fest. Gave it by best but I’m not going to be tuning in again.
PLEASE keep Madame Secretary on the air!!!! Give this show a good chance to make it the big TV hit show that it will prove to be!!! The cast is great, the story lines are current, and it grasps our interest where you want to watch one episode after the other!!!
