ABC had very high hopes for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. That series underperformed in the ratings in season one and has done even worse in season two. Has Marvel’s Agent Carter done any better? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Marvel’s Agent Carter, sexy and smart Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) performs administrative work at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) as men return home from World War II. In her spare time, she goes on secret missions. The rest of the cast includes James D’Arcy, Chad Michael Murray, Enver Gjokaj, and Shea Whigham.
The series had an okay start when it debuted with a pair of episodes on January 6th. It attracted a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.91 million total viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings dropped about 25% in week two and fell another 10% in week three. The numbers have come up a bit since then but they’re still pretty low. Last week’s installment drew a 1.4 in the demo and 4.15 million.
Agent Carter is averaging a 1.5 in the demo and 5.16 million. Agents of SHIELD has been averaging a 1.7 rating with 4.77 million in the same timeslot.
Disney — which owns ABC and Marvel — may find value in keeping the series around because it’s tied in to movies and other projects. Based on the ratings alone, ABC doesn’t have much incentive to bring Agent Carter back for a second season.
It should be noted that ABC promoted Agent Carter as a limited series. That means that the season has a limited and set number of episodes (less than a typical season) — not that the series will only have one season. Executive producer Louis D’Esposito has indicated that he has plans for a second season if the series is renewed.
If Agent Carter does have only one season, hopefully fans will be satisfied with how the finale ends.
But, what do you think? Do you like Marvel’s Agent Carter? If you ran the network would you renew it for a second season, try another Marvel property, or try something else completely new?
i would bring it back without a thought. There is so many Marvel fans out there . Now let think of this Agent Carter helped create Captain America and he was part of the Avengers, and agent of the shield came from that. I see Agent Cater should have more missions. The first season is usually slow and low rating, but a great show will pick up in the second season, and in my opinion agent of the shield has lost a step. Agent Carter is more exciting to watch.
Agent Carter is a great show. An evocative period piece tie in with The First Avenger, Captain America. Hayley Atwell is excellent; strong smart and sexy. It deserves a second season to develop a larger audience. Being promoted as basically a temporary short run probabably did little to encourage viewers initially.

Agent Carter is a compelling character. Beautiful, honorable, tough as nails and an English accent to boot? How could you give HER the boot? Give her a good storyline … now that she has let go of Steve Rogers … this might be difficult to do. But that is the challenge … isn’t it? This shouldn’t be about closure for Agent Carter … this should be a new beginning.
The big problem for both SHIELD and Carter is that ABC slotted them against powerhouse shows thatg were entrenched in their time slots. I myself end up watching them online. And this is another factor that nobody seems to take into account — online demand.
AGENT CARTER is brilliant TV. not just in its scripting, production, period-setting & performances – tho when all the online hoo-ha about female leads & diversity raged on Marvel, in silent confidence, KNEW they had the superb Hayley Atwell ready to continue her one-woman crusade – but more than even that, Agent Carter is the foundation & cornerstone of the MCU that can explore decades of stories leading to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the evolution of HYDRA, and witness New York City develop into the centre point of so many MCU adventures. 8-episode story arcs are the perfect vehicle to build… Read more »
Of the two shows, Agent Carter shows more promise. The series showed how male chauvinism was fought the right way and despite being the underdog character, Agent Carter outshown them by proving her worth with intelligence, ingenuity and exceptional fighting ability. In our modern world of cell phones, skyping and computers, it is refreshing to see how crime was fought back then even if we relied on pretend Stark inventions. Try moving show to different nights and time slots with a strong lead-in program. Please renew Agent Carter. You can do so much with storyline to attract viewers.
I love watching Agent Carter!!!!! PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL ONE OF THE FEW DECENT SHOWS that is worth watching!!!!
PLEASE!!!
Renew! Great historical drama. Great acting. Amazing drama for 60 plus audience.
Yeah both of those shows need to be around a bit longer. They are very enjoyable.
renew agent carter
to me agent carter just didn’t do anything or really add anything to the marvel films just like nor does agents of shield I think maybe marvel would be better doing more superhero based shows at could lead to bigger screen films or least go the way dc comics are going with way better tv shows like Arrow and the Flash that really seem to help build a bigger and better dc comics world and explore new heroes at sometimes are over looked
I love this show and it does a good job at showing who Agent Carter is from the first episode to the last, at a much better level then what Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has done. The season finale disappointed me though, because I was still left with questions of were Agent Carter go’s next (most likely because they didn’t know if there would be a season 2 or not). Sure I know she helps found SHIELD but what I don’t know is how she got to that point or who her husband is, so I have to guess. I… Read more »
Agent Carter was a welcome surprise of a show. Enjoyed it way more than I ever thought I would. It all worked for me from the cast, led by the game and precise Hayley Atwell, to the story, costumes and pulp sensibilities. Here’s to season two of Agent Carter!
Hey Lisa in Australia,
You should be able to watch them on ABC.com at no charge. Only have to watch advertising.
Have a great day!
