ABC had very high hopes for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. That series underperformed in the ratings in season one and has done even worse in season two. Has Marvel’s Agent Carter done any better? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Marvel’s Agent Carter, sexy and smart Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) performs administrative work at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) as men return home from World War II. In her spare time, she goes on secret missions. The rest of the cast includes James D’Arcy, Chad Michael Murray, Enver Gjokaj, and Shea Whigham.
The series had an okay start when it debuted with a pair of episodes on January 6th. It attracted a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.91 million total viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings dropped about 25% in week two and fell another 10% in week three. The numbers have come up a bit since then but they’re still pretty low. Last week’s installment drew a 1.4 in the demo and 4.15 million.
Agent Carter is averaging a 1.5 in the demo and 5.16 million. Agents of SHIELD has been averaging a 1.7 rating with 4.77 million in the same timeslot.
Disney — which owns ABC and Marvel — may find value in keeping the series around because it’s tied in to movies and other projects. Based on the ratings alone, ABC doesn’t have much incentive to bring Agent Carter back for a second season.
It should be noted that ABC promoted Agent Carter as a limited series. That means that the season has a limited and set number of episodes (less than a typical season) — not that the series will only have one season. Executive producer Louis D’Esposito has indicated that he has plans for a second season if the series is renewed.
If Agent Carter does have only one season, hopefully fans will be satisfied with how the finale ends.
But, what do you think? Do you like Marvel’s Agent Carter? If you ran the network would you renew it for a second season, try another Marvel property, or try something else completely new?
This has been a great show and should definitely be concinued for many seasons. It’s a great role model for girls and has Disney’s Quality to it.
RENEW IT!!! PLEASE!!!!!! I loved this show and I love the time period and the writing and the cast and all the tie-ins to the larger Marvel cinematic universe. Seriously, I just really want this show back it’s the only show that I’m praying will get renewed right now.
Bring it back! It’s fantastic
I totally agree with everyone who said it should be renewed for a second season! I never read comic books as a kid, too many pictures and not enough words for my taste. I always, even as a child, enjoyed reading the classics, from children’s literature and Greek Mythology to Shakespeare and tales of King Arthur and hi knights. When Marvel started making movies in the 90s, I watched some out of curiosity… at first. What I discovered was that Marvel was taking on the same types of themes that great writers throughout history have been using, themes of duty,… Read more »
Bring it back, the second season has so much potential given how the pilot season ends! Has depth unlike so much of the reality show foolery that passes as entertainment.
Loved it. Great portrayal of real life for both women and women back then after the war, great social commentary, creative writing. Loved Stark, Jarvis and Carter.
I really think this show should be renewed with more additional episodes, it’s a well written show with a great cast. Great action, we get to know Tony Starks father and what he did to get Stark Enterprises started. I am great big fan of Marvel Comics and to see that Captain America like Spider-Man had a love interest is great! Besides Agent Carter can hold her own as a female fighting villains!! It’s refreshing to see a show with great quality and excellent cliffhangers. Renew the show ABC, please!!!!!!
Let’s put it in perspective; The Flash gets less ratings Agent Carter has been getting, yet no one has been doubting it’ll get renewed. Agents of SHIELD I don’t doubt will be renewed. Agent Carter may not, but it won’t be due to ratings, it’ll be due to Marvel executives deciding not to push that storyline/character forward. Personally, I do hope it will move forward and have my fingers crossed for season 2.
Loved Agent Carter, please renew! Love Agents of shield as well can’t wait to see what will happen next!
I think This period piece is great and the lead character connects with the viewers. Programs with lead characters depicting strong levels of integrity are not seen in many of today’s TV programs. Bring her back.
Please renew for 2nd season. It’s a good story line and has lots of potential.
I’m in my mid 60’s, some of the feel of the show’s surroundings seem familiar, like all the old wood paneling, the cars, the clothing, almost like reliving my childhood in my subconscious.
The actors and script are good, the story and I’ll miss Agent Carter.
I love the show and hopefully they’ll renew it.
Love the show, it tells the truth about how things were in those days on how women had to fight for equality. Brilliant!
Stacey, they are still fighting that.
Before the show even aired, some of the younger ground didn’t like the idea of a female lead, especially a beautiful one that could kick our (and their) butts.
Hopefully they watched anyway and switched sides.
Sorry, I meant younger crowd, not ground, no way to edit.
I agree. I really like the older time period they can work with and I found it refreshing to focus on a strong female lead. (spoiler alert) Also with the whole Dotty the Russian assassin plot twist, it really caught my attention. I enjoyed it more than Agents of Shield. Plus Jarivs is just so darn cute.
I think it should get renewed, and here’s why: Agent Carter is marketable. You have a dynamic but individual lead in a series filled with espionage and intrigue. Frankly, the series picked up the pace mid season, and if a strong second season is written, there is no reason why it shouldn’t outpace Agent of SHIELD.
