Tuesday night, FOX debuted a new drama for the Summer months, Mental. So, did the premiere’s ratings make the network crazy-happy or just drive them crazy?
Mental revolves around an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Edwin Hodge.
The series premiered on Tuesday night and finished in third place for the 9pm hour with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share among the 18-49 demographic.
Those numbers aren’t that impressive but the drama did build on its lead-in, a rerun of the popular and very compatible House. There was also very little drop off between Mental’s first and second half hours, indicating that most watched the entire episode.
So, while Mental didn’t have a great debut, it wasn’t bad either. As we enter into the Summer months, viewership tends to fall off so the network may be okay with these numbers. But, will people return for subsequent installments? Will FOX give the show a second season once all 13 episodes have aired? We’ll have to wait and see.
So, what did you think? Is the show worth keeping or should it be cancelled?

DO NOT CANCEL! THE SHOW IS FANTASTIC! This show is one of the very few, 13, that I subscribe to on Hulu. I watch it every chance I get. Tonight I watched the last episode. I can’t believe you would let such a wonderful view into the world of the mentally ill and the recourse for such illnesses. It truly sheds light on a greatly misunderstood subject.
keep the show they are always taking good shows off and putting dumb ones on, so keep it please
Keep it! While it’s not altogether realistic with true diagnoses, it is a compelling television show,
Keep it. The characters in this show left me wanting more.
omg ! keep the show! what is it with networks canceling the good shows and keeping the mindless drivel?? god forbid we have to actually put some thought into a show rather than having it spoon fed to us! have we really gotten that stupid? I’d like to think not!keep this show it is great! and jack and arturo arent to bad to look at either!
Keep it for next season. It is a pleasure to have a interested show on to replace another reality show.
I looooooooove this show!!!!!! Jack rules!!!!!!! DO NOT CANCEL!!
JACK JACK JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember several times Fox has cancelled excellent series. “Mental” is excellent. The plot needs further development. There are unresolved issues. This means, logically, the story must continue. Fox is now obligated to bring it back. I am tired of networks blindly making us angry by arbitrarily cancelling shows, then claiming the ratings are “low”. If you want the show to succeed, advertise it. When you fail to do so, as Fox has indeed done on purpose before, you doom the show, on purpose. I am done with Fox, if they can’t put on programs I enjoy watching, and cancel… Read more »
best show on tv. bring it back and let go idol. please
Keep it! i love Mental.
KEEP IT!!!
this show rocks my world!! i extremely love it!!! so much to learn and enjoy from it… PLEASE PLEASE keep it, i have enjoyed every single episode from it and im really looking forward to watching more of it.
Thank u!
Just watched last episode. This is a really well crafted program. It would be a shame to cancel this. Especially when a lot of Fox shows aren’t worth watching. So, I guess that’s par for the course.
keep it it’s terrific
I’ve been watching Mental on Hulu.com and have enjoyed it immensely.
However, the season finale- leads me to believe that the show is already canceled.
It’s a smart piece of drama and I’ll be sad if it goes.
It would be nice to keep it- and Jack G. is the hottest psychiatrist…nice.
They can’t end it there with Carl Bell (AKA Pharm Doc) winning…. Open up the next season showing the standard of care dropping as the status quo of just drugging patients rather than taking the time to talk to them and treat them takes hold. Build drama by playing on the conflict between those who Jack converted away from the status quo and the Carl Bell’s of the world. Mid-season let a high profile case come in to the ward, get screwed up by Pharmacy Doc and let Jack get called in to turn things around.
This could be great!
