Tuesday night, FOX debuted a new drama for the Summer months, Mental. So, did the premiere’s ratings make the network crazy-happy or just drive them crazy?
Mental revolves around an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Edwin Hodge.
The series premiered on Tuesday night and finished in third place for the 9pm hour with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share among the 18-49 demographic.
Those numbers aren’t that impressive but the drama did build on its lead-in, a rerun of the popular and very compatible House. There was also very little drop off between Mental’s first and second half hours, indicating that most watched the entire episode.
So, while Mental didn’t have a great debut, it wasn’t bad either. As we enter into the Summer months, viewership tends to fall off so the network may be okay with these numbers. But, will people return for subsequent installments? Will FOX give the show a second season once all 13 episodes have aired? We’ll have to wait and see.
So, what did you think? Is the show worth keeping or should it be cancelled?

Keep It! I love House and now I love Mental too.
KEEP IT! LOVE THE SHOW!
Keep it. I love the show. Put it in place of all the terrible “reality” shows.
Love this show. I also watch House and didn’t find them similar at all. I hope Fox picks it up for a second season!
definitely keep it -we love it!
I think the show deserves more air time. It usually takes a couple of episodes for the audience to catch on. I like this new kind of doctor show.
CANCEL IT….this show is terrible!…a total knock-off of House down to the gang of sidekicks (including token lesbian), the hostage season finale, the Cuddy character etc. etc. except that the writing is bad and the acting is even worse. Totally formulaic, boring and difficult to watch.
House blows this show out of the water!
I love this show and really hope that Fox decides to bring it back. It would be interesting to see what kind of twist there is given the season finale, but a season 2 to me is a must.
Jack is the complete opposite of what you expect for a shrink, but it is refreshing to see. The characters are played well and seem to be breaking out of their shells because of the new “attitude” that Jack brings to the table. I look forward to seeing what more develops.
Keep it
This is an excellent show. I really hope Fox keeps it.
KEEP!! Love the show!
Please keep the show.
Please keep it. I find it intriging…..love the story lines, love the characters.
It does need kicking up just a bit tough.
It seems to me that the tv execs have already decided to cancel it……based on the season finale.
It’s a keeper i like Jack, hate the stuffy psychiatrist. A lot of the characters seemed flat at first, but as time went on most found their voice. The psychosis wasn’t what you’d really see in an inpatient if you’re looking for schizophrenia or depression…the hair was always nice and skin great, I mean how do you make an actor really look like a truly ill person who is incapable of taking care of themselves? I’d love to see some real life issues dealt with that are soft enough for tv like bulimia or manic depression. Can’t we teach the… Read more »
KEEP IT!! The ratings from the television are down, because it is summer time and no one is home to watch it on Saturday nights, so everyone is watching it later on Hulu or other type sites. It is a great show. It tells how doctors (some/most) care about the patient not just the money. I do hate Belle, he definitely needs to be done, but the show needs to stay. The American familes need a good show to watch, not all the guts, gore, police stories that are always on tv… we need some quality shows for once. Enought… Read more »
