Tuesday night, FOX debuted a new drama for the Summer months, Mental. So, did the premiere’s ratings make the network crazy-happy or just drive them crazy?
Mental revolves around an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Edwin Hodge.
The series premiered on Tuesday night and finished in third place for the 9pm hour with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share among the 18-49 demographic.
Those numbers aren’t that impressive but the drama did build on its lead-in, a rerun of the popular and very compatible House. There was also very little drop off between Mental’s first and second half hours, indicating that most watched the entire episode.
So, while Mental didn’t have a great debut, it wasn’t bad either. As we enter into the Summer months, viewership tends to fall off so the network may be okay with these numbers. But, will people return for subsequent installments? Will FOX give the show a second season once all 13 episodes have aired? We’ll have to wait and see.
So, what did you think? Is the show worth keeping or should it be cancelled?

Keep it. The show is great and it brings awareness to a field of study with a serious note. It seems like shows that people like keep getting cancelled. I think they are polling the wrong group. keep the show.
Keep the show. My mom and I talk about the show all the time and how good all the actors are. Chris Vance is a huge hit. He did well on Prison Break. I really hope Fox continues with the series. If not I think one of the other major networks should consider picking it up for it’s second season. Great Show!!!
This show definitly needs to continue. I can’t wait to see a second season.
I love this show, its characters and the various cases w/ each episode. Its about the “human touch” that got my attention. I looked forward to watching each week. That hasn’t happened for a long time . Please bring it back!!!!
Keep it!!!!! love this show, I rate this up there with fox show 24. Love everyone in it. Such good actors. Love the final episode. I wish there was more. I am a BIG FAN…. I hate to see it end. PLEASE FOX…. KEEP THIS ONE…..
Hey — we are all a little Mental at times. The show is interesting and fun. It should be kept on and enjoyed.
Unfortunately, after watching the season finale on Hulu, it seems like the show has been cancelled after all :/
I hope it hasn’t been – it started a bit poorly but it got MUCH better towards the end!
Isn’t it time we had a good show that dealt directly with mental health issues in a human way? This (mental) seems to be the best effort in all tv history. Not since “The Fisher King” has there been a look at mental illness so insightful without devaluing or ostracism.
And my dad, the trial lawyer used to say that there is not one more in need of mental help than the mental health caregiver. (He meant that the shrink is the most in need of a shrink).
mental is our new favorite show!!! I think its right on time for todays challenging times… it would be a very sad day if this show were not given an opportunity to develop and grow!!
Keep up the good work!
Love the show, it is unique, it should be renewed, the characters are wonderful, and I love the way Jack treats people.
Some of the criticism here is pathetic. We all have different taste and if you don’t like the show and state why, then that’s wonderful, that’s why this forum asked for your opinion. But merely saying “cancel it” isn’t helpful and simply saying something like “yuck” or “it’s crap” is equally unhelpful. As for those who complain that it MUST be cancelled because is unrealistic and / or gives unrealistic information about mental health issues, I offer this food for thought – I am an attorney and I can promise you (for whatever an attorney’s promise is worth) that the… Read more »
Dynamite. Superb. Must be renewed.
Love it! It’s fresh compared to some of the dr. show’s out there.
I love the cast – engaging characters. Even the rat-weasel Dr. Belle. I learned a lot about psychoses and appreciated the unorthodox way Ghallager treats the whole person. Hopefully Jack will have a good walkabout and return to us next summer.
Keep it!!! I don’t have TV right now but I’ve watched all of the episodes on hulu. LOVE IT!
